Episode 284 - Peace of the Action (w/ Medea Benjamin)
Added 2023-06-26 11:02:01 +0000 UTCBrie speaks to longtime antiwar activist and Code Pink cofounder Medea Benjamin as she returns from Ukraine about what peace really means, and how to distinguish good faith antiwar commitments from mere political rhetoric as we evaluate the 2024 candidates. Also, what's going on with the lack of a peace movement from left elected, and what exactly went wrong at the Rage Against the War Machine rally?

She did not want to acknowledge the infiltration of code pink by the deep... The rage against war machine fiasco is the proof for me. When you say you want number and then filter who can march with you. You being stupid or disingenuous. I think it is a plant who is trying to sabotage the effort. Hinkle speech at the event was fine and on point. Who gives a s..t that he is a as.....
2023-06-29 11:09:42 +0000 UTCMedea either doesn't understand the state of the war or is misrepresenting it for expediency. I find that weird

2023-06-28 18:42:40 +0000 UTCI responded to another person addressing this sentiment. I agree. That's why it's frustrating to hear an actual left voice praise right wing people when we literally don't have left wing representation in The USA. Left = people centric/toward spooky communism imho. Right = less democracy.

2023-06-28 07:19:41 +0000 UTCI'm tired of the conception of Left vs. Right. The term "Right" originated with those who were against elections and maintaining the monarchy/current system. The term "Left" was associated with those that wanted to overthrow the current system and have a parliamentary electoral system. I have yet to see a single, elected member of the government actually demand a change to the system itself. That means Biden, Sanders, Gatez, Greene, Warren, Williamson, RFK, Trump, Christie, AOC, West, Hedges, Ventura, Peterson, Carlson, Hannity, Haley, Gabbard.... Are all the same to me. They want to maintain the system, so that places them all on my Right.
2023-06-28 05:34:07 +0000 UTCWilliamson understands the need for a working class movement and RFK doesn't, RFK won't have a chance of getting anything passides besides vaccine laws through the FDA/CDC Williamson is flawed but at least she has a theory for change, RFK is a lawyer technocrat lol

2023-06-28 01:00:08 +0000 UTCPeople on the right aren't anti-war tho, they're anti spending. I might be a bit too nitpicky here, it's just annoying it worded in a way that both lends legitimacy to the idea of there being "a left" in the political class while also making it seem like right wingers really just want peace.

2023-06-27 19:04:57 +0000 UTCLook who Bernie’s foreign policy advisors were? Bernie also trashed the CPC letter and no one even had the courage to defend their weakly worded letter except Ro Khanna who was making money off defense contractor stock while voting to increase the pentagon’s budget before being called out. There is little to no dissent on the Dems side but moderate dissent opposing the proxy war on the right. Liberal media paints critics of the proxy as Putin apologists or right wingers. Fox allows on dissenting voices from the anti war left every so often.

2023-06-27 13:34:06 +0000 UTCWhere are the Left Antiwar voices? RBN, Jimmy, Convo Couch, Due Dissidence, are a few, but remember to Blue MAGA & PMC Dems,, all those people are "secret" rightwingers. Marianne's Crowd won't associate with Anti-War Leftists because they can't handle anyone challenging their views. A TRUE peace movement is NEITHER Right or Left. It's everyone who hates war. Democrats (& most Repubs) LOVE War now. Its so weird.
2023-06-27 10:55:59 +0000 UTCBecause of criticism of Marianne? Or people on the outside making criticism about you because of your friendship with her? People get that your friends, and you won't say anything bad about her publicly, so you can stay friends. No worries.😉
2023-06-27 10:49:17 +0000 UTCTrue, and that's why I'll vote Green in the general. Marianne isn't Pro Palestine OR PRO Peace. So that's why RFK Jr.
2023-06-27 10:44:05 +0000 UTCWhat how the fuck can she say most anti-war sentiment is on the right? Give me evidence of this.

2023-06-27 03:57:52 +0000 UTCNo need for hopes. I’m voting RFK in the primary and West in the general. It’s what makes the most sense logically with regards to electoral politics. Also it’s a good opportunity to rebuild the antiwar movement in America. BJG would understand this if her judgement wasn’t so clouded by her friendship with Marianne. I mean I just watched her try to use identity politics to say that Williamson wasn’t getting a fair shake because it’s a boys club.

2023-06-27 03:55:50 +0000 UTCI wanted to like RFK, but, man, the way he immediately flipped on Roger Waters and Palestinians was disturbing. Maybe he has stronger convictions elsewhere, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

2023-06-26 23:19:46 +0000 UTCI agree, Tom. It's a garbage maneuver to tease out partial vids as a way to get new subscribers while punishing veterans. It's tired.

2023-06-26 22:06:37 +0000 UTCBri seemed to have reservations when Medea said that we should narrow the focus of protests to get a wider coalition, but I think Medea answered the other side of her hypothetical when she said that she goes out to other interest group protests and the solidarity isn’t reciprocated. I think we need to acknowledge that liberals don’t prioritize being anti war since Obama. I truly think his presidency destroyed anti war liberalism.
2023-06-26 22:01:17 +0000 UTCBro Brie literally does all of this herself and we only pay $5 a month, chill
2023-06-26 21:14:46 +0000 UTCWhere is the video? Is too much to ask for full video versions of interviews? Honestly, we should get the full video versions immediately on Monday morning, way before partial release on Youtube. But that's I guess too much to ask. WHERE IS THE FULL VIDEO?
2023-06-26 20:50:23 +0000 UTCAgreed. However I’m not entirely convinced of his stance on Israel. Something doesn’t add up. If you’ve seen his foreign policy speech it’s hard to fathom how someone this versed in American empire can be so wrong on something as simple has apartheid. Also hard to imagine that someone would know Waters views on Covid and Ukraine but not on Palestine. Very strange. Perhaps he just has a giant blindspot but at least he is against funding the proxy war and speaks with great animosity about the CIA. He’s better than Biden could possibly beat Trump unlike Marianne. He could even possibly scare progressive liberals into voting 3rd because the “antivax” narrative. Maybe they’ll vote for the guy who campaigned with Obama in 2008.

2023-06-26 18:18:15 +0000 UTCRFK isn’t anti-war regarding Israel/Palestine though.

2023-06-26 16:03:42 +0000 UTCMarianne's campaign was always a joke. It was something cooked up in Krystal ball's head. Marianne evidently knows how to schmooze comfortable PMC-types ~ usually ones with money. She reminds me of the self-help gurus who write books, make bank on speeches, promising a New & Wonderful Life if you just PAY HER. Krystal, Katie & Brie all like Marianne & they're friends. So you have to take that into account, whenever Brie discusses Marianne. Marianne's campaign was NEVER SERIOUS. It was ALWAYS an expensive hobby for Bernie voters who have money burning a hole in their pocket. RFK Jr. has been an environmental lawyer for years. He's been dealing with the EPA & FDA for a long time, and sees their corruption. I would love him as Fed AG! He could do some real damage going after the corporate stranglehold. Plus, he is Anti War & Pro Peace. Marianne thinks Biden is great, except for M4A. She's a fucking JOKE. I will also vote RFK Jr. in the primary, and Cornel West (hopefully) in the General. I also think RFK Jr. would be open to & seriously listen to any demands that Cornel west & the Greens made, in exchange for support. He's not Braindead Biden or Torture-loving Sociopath, like DeSantis.

2023-06-26 15:50:26 +0000 UTCIt’s seems Brie will give the benefit of the doubt to Williamson her friend but has been going hard at RFK. I think she should have on Aaron Good who was just on useful idiots to discuss the Kennedys, the deep state and the validity of RFK’s antiwar rhetoric. Right now I feel voting RFK in primary and West in the general in the best path forward for the left in regards to electoral politics. It’s either that or ignore the dog and pony show that are US elections.

2023-06-26 15:43:49 +0000 UTCA little background on the Minneapolis incident: The man who grabbed Benjamin's phone is a fellow named Kieran Frasier Knutson, who made a name for himself in the 1990s. There was a protest in the 1990s (I want to say fall 1993) wherein Knutson attacked a skinhead, then claimed self-defense. (A friend of mine who was there told me that the violence was instigated by Knutson's side, the Progressive Student Organization, which had a nasty reputation for violence. A lot of us who actually agreed with them kept our distance from the PSO because of their almost cult-like goonishness. From what I had heard, the skinhead and his girlfriend were just passing by; take that as you will.) The whole thing got dragged out for three years because a reporter and photographer for the Minnesota Daily (U of MN student newspaper) were present, and the local DA, Mike Freeman, was trying to force the Daily to give over the photos to use in trial. Freeman lost that battle, probably ending his chances of a gubernatorial run as well as forcing him to drop the case against Knutson (the photos were central), and he had to step aside for Amy Klobuchar to be DA for a term to set up her senatorial run (Freeman became DA again when Klobuchar's term ended). But anyways, Benjamin got attacked a goon who isn't a convicted felon by dumb luck.
