Poll Results (2024 Rules)

The poll has closed and the results are in. At 51.3%, Wait for the web-app is the winner of the 4 options.

A big thanks to everybody who voted in the poll and those who responded with their thoughts on the matter. It greatly helps me to understand what you prioritise in a character sheet.

*With the 3 other options being a vote for (first) updating the PDF with the 2024 rules, the poll doesn't actually have such a clear winner as one might think at first glance.

This is on me, I probably should've thought about the poll options a bit better. In my defence, I had not considered that waiting for the web-app would get this much support. I really expected it would be dead heat between the first two options (minimal code changes or minimal design changes). How foolish do I look now...

At 48.7%, the vote for first updating the PDF before working on the web-app is in a very close second place. Because almost half of the 1060 responses wanting to have a workable 2024 PDF before I put my full focus on the web-app, I would like to meet you halfway.

I have decided to first get a 2024 PDF Character Sheet ready for you. However, this will be one I put minimal time and efforts into. This will include leaning a lot on the excellent work that the community has done in getting an add-on script going for all the 2024 changes.

I'll adopt this add-on script and create a 2024 character sheet PDF that will be made available alongside the current 2014 character sheet PDF.

This 2024 version will not have any changes to the design and only the bare minimum of underlying code changes (if any are even necessary). For example, the sheet will still refer to "known" spellcasters for Bards and Sorcerers even though the terminology has changed in the 2024 PHB (the functionality hasn't however).

Once this 2024 version is done, I'll continue with renewed focus on the web-app.

I intend to have this PDF done in time for you Adventurers League players to be able to meet the tight deadline AL has imposed. I won't make any promises, though, there is a lot of content to review.

While the web-app is in development, I will still fix bugs in the sheets. I'll also keep its content updated, although I might look to the community to help speed up the process.

If you are wondering what this web-app is that I'm talking about, then please see the previous post: FAQ About The Next Step.

Comments

I'm going to create the functionality of the current sheets before adding anything new like a summoning or bastion sheet. What the next addition will be will probably be a poll by that time (i.e. not anytime soon).

MorePurpleMoreBetter

Any thoughts on a bastion sheet?

Steffan-rene Cowan

Please do the pdf, I am seeing the comments and see the desire for the pdf to reflect the true needs of the people.

Rodolfo Ponder

I'm happy to hear you feel so strongly about the PDF. The PDF is not where my heart is, as it is reaching the limits of its possibilities (and on some older systems, already beyond the limit of a reliable program).

This election result was as bad as the last one I voted in. Don't trust the masses!! Make the PDF, go with your heart. You are the one who had this brain child and put the work in. I am very shocked at the web app results too. And thank you for hammering out the PDF first. You are a saint.

I don't pin myself to a timeframe, as I rather do it well than rush it to just get it done.

Hi. I'm very looking forward for the 2024 pdf automated char sheet. I've used the 2014 a lot and found it very useful. Is there any approx time when the automated pdf for 2024 will be published? It's the only thing holding me back from playing 2024 haha. Thanks a lot for your great work!

I'm positive that what you are saying is not true. There is no inherently legal format that you can use to distribute (or even sell) copyrighted materials that you don't own the rights to. For example, EN World has had to take down an Excel character builder because it contained copyrighted materials. If you start selling PDF versions of the 2024 PHB, I'm very sure WotC will take legal action against you.

MorePurpleMoreBetter

Spreadsheets and PDFs are inherently protected from legal action as Adobe Acrobat, MS Excel, and any other Spreadsheet or PDF Reader app isn't expressly programmed to violate their IP.

Anthony Harvey

That's not true, unfortunately, WotC can and have taken action against free online resources. The online resource can only provide the SRD content. Anything else can optionally be added by the user. This is effectively the same as the PDF now, where the freely available one on my website only has the SRD content and you can import more content with add-on scripts.

MorePurpleMoreBetter

Wizards has taken action in the past against any web app with a paid component. They can't do anything against free though.

Anthony Harvey

That I can't answer yet as it depends a bit on the execution and possible dependencies on paid resources, but for now open source is the intention.

MorePurpleMoreBetter

Sounds good. One question here: is the web app going to be open source? How will that work?

Darrell Malone

Great compromise and good luck!

Enrique Velazquez

The Best of Both Worlds solution, and thank you for all the work you do.

Ramona Wanders

Thank you for all your hard work and good luck ^^
