5e has been saved, WotC scraps OGL changes
Added 2023-01-27 21:43:23 +0000 UTCAn announcement was just made on D&D Beyond where the whole System Reference Document 5.1 has been published under a Creative Commons license.
If you don't know what this all means, then please read this Gizmodo article.
This is a truly momentous occasion, where the community's outrage has changed the decisions of a company. I did not expect Wizards of the Coast to see the light and to not only walk back their intended changes, but to use an even more generous license. Now I again have hope that the next edition of D&D will be equally accessible to third-party publishers.
Thank you to everyone who made their voices heard and for standing strong against the tide. One could say the D&D community has won this with a couple of natural 20s on their Insight and Intimidation checks. I expect WotC realised that having their core audience not only search for TTRPG alternatives, but also boycot the D&D movie would be pretty bad.
Also, welcome to everybody who has started using my sheets in the last couple of weeks in search for a D&D Beyond alternative.
Many people have applauded the idea of me making character sheets for Pathfinder 2nd edition. I'm sorry to say that this is now even more unlikely. I acknowledge that PF2e is probably a more mechanically sound system that is very close in feel to D&D and that it would be a lot of fun to play. However, after playing D&D 3.5e for about 14 years I can't see my group going back to a Vancian magic system or giving up bounded accuracy (although I won't say never).
More news will come when I have new content to share with you.
