v13.0.0beta25

Another Unearthed Arcana article release, another beta update. This time again with some fixes, including one that I have received a lot of complains about. If you import your character from an older sheet (without UA:CFV) and afterwards include the UA: Class Feature Variants source, the sheet will now immediately show the “Choose Feature” button on the second page. Before, you’d have to first change the character’s level to get this button to appear, which was confusing, I agree. Now the sheet will re-evaluate the need for the button whenever you change anything in the Source Selection dialog.

Why not release v13 right now you ask? The answer is the same as for the previous three beta releases: I would like to (finally) have a website up and running where I can host it, with a dedicated way for bug reporting and frequently asked questions. You might have noticed that none of the bookmarks that link to my website work at the moment. I would like for that to be remedied before releasing v13 outside of this Patreon. I came a long way with making the website, but stopped working on it as I was putting more time and effort towards finishing the support for magic items. The website is working, it just needs contents, so that is what I’ll be focussing on next.

I understand how inconvenient the limitation on importing from betas has been and like to remedy this issue. Because beta14 through beta25 have no underlying changes in the fields or functions, it will be possible to import between beta14 through beta25 without issue. Also, you can expect to be able to import your character from beta14 through beta25 over to the final v13.

One caveat, if you are importing from a beta15 or beta16 that has a duplication error with the ability score increase from magic items, than that duplication error will also be brought over into this beta.

So please don’t hesitate to use this beta as your full character sheet, there shouldn’t be any issues bringing anything from it along over to the stable release of v13.

However, it still won’t be possible to import from betas older than beta14 (v13.0.0beta - v13.0.0beta13), as they do have different fields and/or functions that won't translate.

Comments

I'm glad to hear you found out what was stopping the Class Feature Variants from being accessible. I guess it had to do with the Revised Ranger being included ;)

MorePurpleMoreBetter

I worked it out. I'm just a moron. Thanks for making such a great sheet.

Rob Hardwick

Sorry didn't mean to post a blank comment. I think I'm just an idiot but I cant get the sheet to include the 2019 class feature variants for the ranger. I have tried including/excluding everything I can think of. Help.

Rob Hardwick

Hi MPMB

Rob Hardwick

I'm sorry to hear the sheet is not working for you Jeremy. I'm a bit confused with what you are trying to describe. Is this about the spell sheet pages of the character sheet PDF or with the Complete Spell Sheets per Class? And is this with the pages of the PDF or with the spell selection dialog? If it is with the spell selection dialog, then you should know that it can't be dynamically resized. It is made to fit a screen with at least 800 vertical pixels. If your screen has less pixels than that, it will not fit, unfortunately. Do note that you can navigate the dialog with the TAB key and press an active button with the ENTER key. You can also always cancel a dialog with the ESC key.

MorePurpleMoreBetter

I'm having an issue with spell sheets. While working on them, the next options at the very bottom of the sheet are appearing under the toolbar with no way to scroll to them. moving the toolbar barely fixes this problem.

Jeremy Strunk

Hi Krista, Thank you for taking the time to (try to) reproduce the issue. My apologies for my late reply, we had some visitors from out of town. Today I have been playing around with and thinking of ways to get the sheet to do what you experienced, but without any luck. If you ever do happen upon this issue again, please save the sheet and send it to me. I would be very interested in getting my hands on the sheet where this issue is visible. One question though, I don't really follow this: "This time I clicked OK on that one, and then got two more that included Greater Favored, Fleet of Foot, and the other Hunter Conclave options." Do you mean that when you select the Revised Ranger you get pop-ups reminding you there are features to select? I have not implemented any such pop-ups, so if you are getting those then there is something else going on. You should only be getting pop-ups to select the language proficiencies gained from Favored Enemy and Greater Favored Enemy, followed by the "Changes Requiring Your Attention" pop-up. Lastly, be aware that you don't have to first add XP to make a character at a specific level. You can use the "Class Selection" bookmark to bring up the class dialog. XP will be automatically set for the right level when you add class levels like that.

MorePurpleMoreBetter

That is correct, the class feature variants are for the PHB ranger and not available for the revised ranger, as per the UA article for the class feature variants. However, more people have requested an implementation for the variants for the revised ranger. You can go on Discord to upvote this feature request.

MorePurpleMoreBetter

Frustratingly, I can't reproduce it either. I logged the following as my steps: Opened new copy of a beta25 At Sourcebooks prompted, selected ALL and applied Added 48000 xp, and chose Upgrade level to 9 Applied 9 levels to Ranger, Source displays as UA:RR, Select Hunter Conclave, Apply Clicked OK and Close through series of pop-ups. And that was the difference right there. When I did it a week ago, I only remember getting ONE popup that referenced the need to choose Favored Enemy. This time I clicked OK on that one, and then got two more that included Greater Favored, Fleet of Foot, and the other Hunter Conclave options.

Krista Young

Beta 25. Using the Revised Ranger, I am not getting the choice to use the Class Features variant. For example, it automatically gives me Favored Enemy and Natural Explorer instead of Deft Explorer and Favored Foe. And I always include all sources in the sheet.

Nick McVey

Thank you for reporting any issues you find with the betas! My apologies for the late reply, I missed the initial notification for both your comments and am only discovering them now. This is indeed very weird behaviour. Unfortunately, I am unable to reproduce this. Can you please walk me through how to get the sheet to do this, starting with a freshly downloaded v13.0.0beta25?

MorePurpleMoreBetter

Thank you for reporting any issues you find with the betas! My apologies for the late reply, I missed the initial notification for both your comments and am only discovering them now. This is indeed an oversight on the Colourful versions of the sheet. I'll make sure it is fixed in the next update. In the meantime, you can get the lines to be removed by changing the visible sections on that sheet and then switching them back, using the button "Choose Visible Sections" on that page.

MorePurpleMoreBetter

Second finding on beta 25. In the Text Options for Multi-line fields I always change it to Hide lines for multi-line fields. I also set the font size to 6. This seems to be working in all fields EXCEPT the Notes field in the bottom left corner of the Status/Possessions page. It's still showing the lines, and since I have an increased font size, things aren't lining up. It makes it look like strike-through is on for several of the lines. All of the other multi-line text fields do not have lines in them - just this one.

Krista Young

I haven't tried updating my sheet since about beta 6, and figured it was time, since we leveled up last week. So I'm recreating my sheet using beta 25. Level 9 Ranger using UA: Ranger Revised, which is successfully selected in my class. However, down in the Class Features, there seems to be a problem. In Choose Feature, it is letting me choose Favored Enemy (humanoids), Greater Favored Enemy (aberrations), Fighting Style, Hunter's Prey, and Defensive Tactics All of my selected options have check marks by them, even when I return to double-check it. But it's not actually showing the information in the Class Features box. Favored Enemy UA:RR shows, then it goes to Favored Enemy from PHB and Natural Explorer/Favored Terrain from PHB. And none of the rest of my UA:RR features are detailed out. Here's a copy/paste of what the Class Features is showing: Ranger (Hunter Conclave), level 9: ◆ Favored Enemy: Humanoids (Ranger 1, UA:RR 2) [+4 weapon attack damage] I get a bonus to damage rolls with weapon attacks against humanoids I have adv. on Wis (Survival) to track and Int checks to recall info about humanoids I learn a language, typically one spoken by or associated with humanoids ◆ Favored Enemy (Ranger 1, PHB 91) [1 favored enemy] Use the "Choose Feature" button above to add a favored enemy to the third page When selecting a favored enemy, I also learn one of the languages it speaks I have adv. on Wis (Survival) checks to track and Int checks to recall info about them ◆ Natural Explorer (Ranger 1, PHB 91) [1 favored terrain] Use the "Choose Feature" button above to add a favored terrain to the third page

Krista Young

Thank you for reporting any issues you find with the betas! I'll make sure this is fixed in the next version of the sheets.

MorePurpleMoreBetter

In the most recent update the Spare the Dying spell still shows touch for range for the Grave Domain Cleric, it should read 30'.

Lance Schantz

You can me both, I wouldn't have been able to find this issue without your help! I think I found a workaround for this bug that I'll implement in the next version of the sheet. Hopefully, you won't have this issue anymore with the next version of the sheet. Then you can have the mini page thumbnail there as often as you'd like!

MorePurpleMoreBetter

Awesome. Glad we could figure it out. :) It's really not an issue for me anymore since it's easy to avoid once you know what the cause is. Thanks for the help and feedback! I would not have figured this out on my own.

Revelator

Great work with figuring out what is causing this! It took me some time to figure out that this is the little window that appears in the top right when you double-click the middle mouse button and not the Page Thumbnails sidebar that you were talking about. I didn't even know about this feature before now as I have never used the middle mouse button for scrolling in a PDF. I did some testing and this seems to be a bug with Adobe Acrobat. Nothing I can really do about it, but I'll see if I can find a workaround. The solution for you in the meantime is clear, just remove that preview window before generating a spell sheet or removing pages. I have submitted a bug report to Adobe, now it is hoping they do something about it: https://acrobat.uservoice.com/forums/590923-acrobat-for-windows-and-mac/suggestions/39561631--bug-report-deleting-a-page-while-the-mini-page-p

MorePurpleMoreBetter

I can say with confidence it's the Page Preview that's the cause. If I double-click the page with my middle-mouse button to bring up the Page Preview and generate the sheet while the Preview is visible, it breaks consistently. See if you can reproduce it this way. If you can't I'll give you my sheet that breaks when I do this. Hope this helps. :) Edit: A word

Revelator

I haven't tried it on other machines, and it's difficult to reproduce on the one I have been using. * My Adobe is up to date, it's the first thing I checked. * Page preview is normally disabled, but I use clicking and dragging with middle mouse to scroll the sheet. Just clicking with middle mouse enables and disables the preview and sometimes I enable it by accident. I usually disable it as soon as I notice. I'll have a look at that and see if I can reproduce it more reliably using the preview. * I could be wrong, but I don't think Adobe allows me to do anything until the sheet is completely finished rendering. I was reading through the spells and saw a few spells I want to change to something else. Went into the spell sheet regeneration, changed those and clicked regenerate. The window came up normally. I swapped out some spells, removed others, etc. I continued on to the final window of the wizard and clicked the generate button. This is when it broke. It doesn’t break consistently, but I make loads of changes while building a character. If the sheet generated successfully, I’ll usually scan it to make sure I’m happy with it, then move back up to the top and start reading through the whole sheet. Sometimes I’ll find something I misunderstood reading it the first time or some area I can improve on. After making those changes, it usually impacts the spell sheet, be it the number of spells allowed, prepared, or the spells I’d run with the build. This leads me to regenerate the sheet, and the cycle starts again. * File is save on my desktop before I started editing. I also make a copy of the original before I edit. I like to have a clean sheet handy. I'm not so sure it could be a slow machine. I have quite a beefy desktop. CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X RAM: 32GB DDR4 GFX: GeForce RTX 2060 Drive: 250GB NVMe SSD I'll make some effort to reproduce this, for now however it seems random. I also think it might be class specific, but that could also just be coincidence. Both times it broke while generating a sheet for Fighter (Eldritch Knight) and Artificer (Battle Smith). I created 2 different characters afterwards with no issues. It could be a coincidence though. The fail-safes will make it harder to break, yeah? If so, let me try to reproduce it more reliably with the current sheet first. I'll spend some time later today on it.

Revelator

Great job breaking it again! I have never heard of the error "One or more pages are in use and could not be deleted.", but searching a bit on Google it seems to be a common issue and nobody has a solution for it. As you are the only one (yet) to complain about this, my first reaction is to think it is something to do with your machine and/or settings. Am I right in assuming you haven't had this error on any other machines? In the articles I found with Google, people suggest to: * Make sure you are running the latest Adobe Acrobat (after going to Help >> About Adobe Acrobat Reader DC it should say "2019.021.20061"). * Disable the preview page in Windows Explorer * Wait until all pages have fully rendered before trying to generate the spell sheet * Make sure to save the file somewhere prior to opening it in Adobe Acrobat (i.e. don't open directly from a download or read-only source) My best guess is that you are somehow able to start generating a new spell sheet while the spell sheet page hasn't completed rendering. Perhaps your machine is not so fast in working with this heavy PDF and in your hury of regenerating spell sheets you caught it before it was done with the page. If this is the case, I fully expect it is due to my changes to 'speed up' the sheet, which improve the speed significantly, but aren't officially supported by Adobe. I would also be very interested in a walkthrough how to reproduce this bug, but I expect it is more something that is happening by chance than something that can be consistently reproduced. I am not sure how I could remedy this bug. And if there is no consistent way of testing for it, it might well be impossible to find a solution. So please let me know if you find a way to reproduce this! Would you be interested in me sending you a sheet that has some fail-safes enabled to see if you can reproduce the error with it?

MorePurpleMoreBetter

So I broke it again. :P I was swapping out spells and regenerating the sheet multiple times when it happened. This time however the error showed up because the console was enabled earlier. This is the error I got right when it broke: RaiseError: One or more pages are in use and could not be deleted. Doc.deletePages:2604:Doc SpellsButton:Exec ===> One or more pages are in use and could not be deleted. Now I keep getting the same error as earlier when I try to generate the sheet: TypeError: tDoc.getField(...) is null 2587:Document-Level:Functions2

Revelator

No worries, thank you for sending the sheet. It would've been very useful if it was a bug. Let me know if this happens again, because maybe there is something happening related to my sheet.

MorePurpleMoreBetter

I figured as much and already switched to a clean sheet. Thanks for having a look. :) Thought I’d let you have a look in case it was a bug.

Revelator

Hi Johannes, I got the sheet and found the issue. It seems that Acrobat ran into some kind of runtime error while trying to generate the spell sheet. I don't know what caused it, but probably some complication with another piece of software or a hardware error (RAM). The result is a spell sheet page that doesn't have the fields on it that it should have and the sheet expecting there to be fields but that are unreachable. If you want to be on the safe side I can recommend building your character in a new, freshly downloaded sheet, becuase there is a chance that this PDF is corrupt and unsalvageable. If you want to try and keep using this PDF, you can fix the issue by running the following line of code from the JS Console (which you can open from within the Import Files dialog): Value("Template.extras.SSfront", ""); tDoc.deletePages(5);

MorePurpleMoreBetter

No problem. :) I sent you a message.

Revelator

Hi Johannes, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. I'm happy to take a look if you send (a link to) your sheet to me. You might actually see yourself what is going wrong if you enable Acrobat to show the JS Debugger when JavaScript errors occur. You can do this via Edit >> Preference >> JavaScript >> check the box for "Show console on errors and messages". It will probably show you the error message that the sheet is getting, but it won't tell you exactly how to fix it.

MorePurpleMoreBetter

Hi. I broke the sheet somehow. I've tried to reproduce it from scratch but could not. Here are some things I noticed after it broke: * The skill proficiency tooltip doesn’t show the ones gained from the background * The D&D logo doesn’t appear on the companion page * Unable to generate a spell sheet Not being able to generate the spell sheet is the first thing I noticed after it broke. Would it help if I uploaded the sheet somewhere so you could have a look at it?

Revelator

That was my initial read too (1/2 level [minimum of 1] + INT mod), but D&D Beyond calculated it differently, and that made me reread it and ask others for their interpretations of the rule. The consensus seems to be that "minimum of one" refers to the total number of spells prepared, not to "half level, rounded down" (which is what you and I seemed to have read it as initially). I think the rule is a little ambiguous, though, and does permit for the other interpretation. In any event, thanks for being so responsive! These sheets are amazing!

Allen J. Oh

Haha, I do for sure. But the idea of making all of this again from scratch in a format that I have no experience with doesn't sound very appealing. 5 years of tinkering is not easily recreated in another format, especially when having to start from scratch. And no, I wouldn't be able to transfer any of the JavaScript over as AcroJS is a very different beast.

MorePurpleMoreBetter

Thank you for reporting any issues you find with the betas! That is interesting, I had originally read it as 1/2 level (minimum of one) + Int mod, so that is why it is calculating like it is. But on a re-read, I have to agree with you. This issue really only comes up at 1st level for half casters, which until the Artificer came out don't have casting at 1st level. I'll fix it in the next version of the sheet.

MorePurpleMoreBetter

Oh, that explains it! I tried again with PHB Ranger and had no issues. Thanks!

Silke Beyer

One thing I noticed in beta24 that seems to still be present in beta25: when generating a spell sheet for the artificer, the number of spells to prepare seems to be off. In particular, if I have a 1st level artificer with a 16 INT (+3 bonus), the number of spells to prepare should be three (1/2 level, rounded down, plus INT bonus, minimum of one spell). However, in this scenario, the sheet tells me that I should prepare four spells.

Allen J. Oh

Might it be that you are using the Revised Ranger (you have included the UA:RR source)? Because there are no variant class features for the Revised Ranger, only for the PHB ranger. When I create a Druid 3, Ranger 3 with the latest beta, I don't have this issue. If you have the issue with the PHB ranger, can you please walk me through how to get the sheet to show this issue, starting with a freshly downloaded sheet?

MorePurpleMoreBetter

Do you ever feel that youre dangerously close to just writing a new application that simply outputs a printable PDF?

CJ Micklitsch

I've tried Druid 3, Ranger 3 und could only select for Druid.

Silke Beyer

Thank you for reporting any issues you find with the betas! However, I'm unable to reproduce this. Which two classes did you select that the Variant Class Features are only selectable for one of the classes using the "Choose Feature" button? I just tried this with a "Fighter 1, Ranger 1" character and can select the feature for both without issue.

MorePurpleMoreBetter

Minor thing I noticed in beta24 that sems to be the same in beta25: when I have a multiclass character, I can only choose variant class features for the first class, not the second though. Anyway, thanks for the quick addition of the new subclasses!
