Chapter 180: Northbound
Added 2024-07-15 08:08:30 +0000 UTC“Should you have killed him?” Lucia asked, glancing over her shoulder as she and Leif walked between the sandy hills and arid shrublands that lined the western coast. “He might have been lying.”
“He wasn’t. I could tell.” Leif replied, stabbing a driftwood staff into the side of the dune as he scaled it. “Also, I’m concerned you would ask me that. I don’t think killing another person should be one of the first courses of action you consider.”
He reached the top, boots leaving deep trenches in the sand with every step, then turned back and extended a golden arm down to where Lucia stood, not meeting his gaze.
“He was… a bad person.” She muttered, her voice low.
“Zane made a mistake. And he recognised that. He even apologised, which is better than I would expect from most people.”
“But he attacked us! He could have killed- He might have- Ugh, it's not right. What he did was evil!”
“Evil.” Leif repeated, still holding out his hand. “Is that what you really think?”
Lucia clenched her fists and gritted her teeth. She glared up at Leif, her eyes wide, her jaw trembling. “Stop reading my emotions, it's not fair!”
“I don’t need to be an empath to know that you’re upset.”
“Upset? I’m furious! I’m so angry I could explode! Don’t tell me that I’m wrong to feel like this! He cut Roy away from me! Roy’s my responsibility, and I don’t even know where he is! I don’t know if he’s safe, if he’s scared, cold, hungry?! I need to be there for him, and that stupid white haired idiot swordsman took him away, cut him out of my life!”
Leif stood atop the dune, watching Lucia rant, her orange eyes ablaze, the very first hint of dawn just appearing in the early morning sky. He let out a breath of air, then let his golden arm dissipate, at the same time stepping forward and sliding back down the sandy hill. He walked past Lucia, who whirled around, face red and breath shaky as he did so.
“What are you doing?” She asked, her voice breaking.
“We’re taking a break. You need to rest, it’s been a long night.”
“No, we need to keep going! At this rate it will take months to find him!”
Leif sighed as he sat. “I haven't known you for very long, but I’ve noticed something interesting about you. So please, if you’re in such a rush, make it up the dune. If you can, I will follow.”
Lucia wrinkled her nose, glaring defiantly. Then she turned and marched with all the dignity and grace she could muster up the dune. She made it halfway before her legs gave out and she slipped, falling back to the bottom. Lucia angrily dusted herself off, then tried to run up the dune, but again she fell. She was shaking by the time she slid down to the bottom, a mix of impotent rage and exhaustion rendering her immobile. She yelled wordlessly at the dune, and tried again, then again.
After a minute she stopped, her shoulders heaving, fingers digging into the sand, tears streaking down her face and falling off her chin. Leif stood and slowly made his way over to her, kneeling beside her and placing a hand on her back.
“I have to find him.” She sobbed. “I need to. If I don’t… I can’t…”
“You will find him again. But for now you need to focus on yourself. You need to survive, Lucia, you need to help yourself before you can help him. Until you meet again, you’ll need to trust that Roy is capable of taking care of himself, that he’ll be safe without you.”
“But without him-” Lucia choked on her own words, the fight fleeing from her limbs like a breath being exhaled. She slumped, and Leif caught her before her face planted into the sand. “I failed. If I was stronger, smarter, more capable, I would have been able to protect him.”
“You’re too hard on yourself. This is far more my failing than it is yours. You’re just a kid, Lucia, how could you have possibly stood up to someone three times your age and a hundred levels higher?”
“You don’t understand.” She said weakly, leaning on his shoulder as he led her to where the ground was flattest, and the shrubs best protected against the wind. “This was my purpose. My whole life, everything we’ve been through. For it to have been worth it, he needs to be with me, safe and happy.”
“Lucia, you are more than just your duty to your brother.”
“Am I? Everything I’ve done, everything I’ve endured… It was all for him. All for his future.”
“It was for you as well, don’t forget that.”
“It wasn’t. It wasn’t at all. If it had just been me, if Roy wasn’t there, or if he had-” She swallowed thickly, hugging her knees and squeezing shut her eyes. “I would have given up, I wouldn’t have had the strength to continue. It was so hard, so painful. If I didn’t have Roy, I would have found a corner in the city and given up, let it all end.”
Leif didn’t know what to say, so he kept quiet, wrapping her with a gentle, reassuring blanket of his aura. He leaned back and watched as the sky turned from black to grey, and the wispy clouds drifting lazily overhead grew in definition as the sun’s light brushed against them.
“He was dying, getting to the Academy was our last choice.” Lucia said finally, her voice hollow.
“I see.” Leif said softly.
“Please help me again.”
“I already promised I would. You don’t need to ask.”
Lucia sniffed, then nodded, wiping her face with the back of her hand. It left a sandy smear, but she didn’t seem to notice.
“I have a sister, younger, there’s a similar age gap between you and Roy.” Leif said after the silence had stretched on for several minutes.
“Yeah, I heard. Her name was Flavia, right?”
“Flavia.” Leif nodded. “I think I failed her, badly. By dying and becoming what I am now, she now lives the life that was meant for me. She has my responsibilities, my duties, my burdens. I miss her badly, or maybe the idea of her, but there’s a rift between us now that I’m not sure how to cross.”
“You should find her.” Lucia said, and Leif could tell that her focus had sharpened, more interested in his words than her own fears and worries.
“I should. That’s been the plan now for several months, I guess I’ve been putting it off, or maybe I just don’t know how to do it properly.”
“She’s in Varan, right?”
“Yes. And with the war between the Republic and the Empire it will be in our best interest to stay inland, away from the coast if at all possible.” Leif said, his voice low.
“That makes sense. But why did you say it like that?”
“Because to get to Pherin from where we are now, if we travel northward, stick inland and try to avoid the war… Well, we’ll be passing through Varan. Maybe I’ll get my chance then.” He mentally reached into his spatial ring and withdrew a travellers cloak, he folded it, then handed it to Lucia. “But before either of us can do anything, you need to rest. I’ll keep watch and make sure nothing attacks. Then we’ll take care of system business, and continue on our way. Does that sound like a plan?”
“Mhmm.” Lucia said, resting her head on the cloak. She was asleep within seconds.
===
The morning proved to be more eventful than Leif had hoped. He spotted a pack of monsters that looked like scaled wolves dashing over the distant dunes not thirty minutes after he and Lucia had made camp. That was followed by him noticing sails on the horizon, though he wasn’t sure to which nation they belonged to.
They had travelled north overnight, but looking south, Leif could still make out the distant plumes of smoke from the destroyed fleet. He and Lucia had reached the shore out of a raft he had cobbled together with [Wood Manipulation], and had needed to avoid, or in one case, confront bands of Republic soldiers who had made it to the beach.
Seeing the bodies washing up on the sands throughout the night had been a bleak sight, the wreckage of well over a dozen ships littering the coast. They had even seen a group of four legged constructs skitter out of the surf and dash into the countryside, but had chosen to let them pass. Physically Leif was in perfect condition, but after over an hour of nearly nonstop combat and tension, his soul was strained, several skills nearing the point of breaking.
He glanced to the side as Lucia shifted, but the girl was still sleeping, even if her eyelids were fluttering and she kept muttering slurred words. She was deeply troubled, and in ways she reminded Leif of himself, or perhaps her life story mirrored his own in a twisted way. Both had lost everything during the war with the enslavers, forced into lives they weren't prepared for. In a way, Lucia had succeeded in ways Leif had failed.
The scion tried to cast his mind north, seeking the nebulous connection he had with his domain tree. It felt, in a way, like one of his conjured limbs, only it was too far away for him to control. He sought out the teleportation anchor [The Amber Path] had created, and found that it was faded, unreachable now that he had used the skill, even if he had failed to reach his destination. There was a chance the cooldown would only be a handful of weeks, but the feeling he got from the skill wasn’t looking hopeful. It would be months, potentially closer to the full year. Maybe, if by some miracle he reached level forty and evolved his monster class the skill would upgrade and the cooldown would reset, but it was a distant hope.
But his progress towards the next major milestone in his advancement had been taken. As stressful and grim as the last day had been, it had resulted in one final level being gained. War, it seemed, could bring more than its fair share of experience. Maybe that was why so many people willingly fought and died in them. Was that why the enslavers had invaded the northern kingdoms? Were the ant monsters looking to create more powerhouses like the awakened ant Hera had fought above Far-Reach? If that had been their plan, it had likely failed. As far as Leif had read, heard, and seen, all the enslaver armies had been destroyed.
He shook his head and stood, doing a final sweep of the nearby dunes before turning his attention to his system notification. A new skill selection awaited.
Level up! Class [Scion of Aeons] is now level 25!
For slaying the enemies of the Blight, and spreading the blessings of the Amber during a period of open conflict you have gained a level!
+1 to [Alacrity] +1 to [Intelligence] +1 to [Willpower] +1 to [Charisma] +5 free points!
New class skills available! [Create Gilded Wood] or [Temporal Glare] or [Reconstitute Echo]!
Mana reinforcement progress 45%!
Leif’s eyes flickered across the system messages. This wasn’t the first time he had read them, but it was the first time he had dedicated his full attention. In a few hours the system would give him a warning to pick within twelve hours, and judging by the three skills he had been offered he might be contemplating his choice until the last moment. But what truly caught his attention was the description of his level up.
‘Enemies of the Blight’ implied quite a lot about the half of his monstrous being he understood the least. After-all, he had been killing humans. Unless the system considered the handful of constructs he had destroyed to be the ‘enemies’ in question. Blight monsters had stalked the aftermath of the battle in which he had fought in his past life, and he recalled battling his ‘siblings’ back when he was more tree than man. It was concerning, and combined with the knowledge he had gained from Aei’leshs’ corpse in the temple below Dimid he painted a somewhat stark picture. It was also interesting that the system would mention the Blight at all, after his last evolution, Leif had somewhat suspected that he had moved almost entirely away from that part of his new existence, but clearly there was still some less than savoury power rattling around within him.
Maybe that had been why Vevosis had been so eager to hunt him down. But no, that rang false. The Spire Head had been after him for less than altruistic reasons, Leif had sensed the hunger, sanguine and predatory, it was likely he wouldn’t forget it anytime soon. He blinked back to the present, only to catch Lucia squinting at him.
“Awake are you?” He asked.
“You were really still. It was kind of weird.”
“It’s an easy habit to fall into, though I’ve gotten better at it over time. Sometimes it feels like moving is not what I should be doing. Not many trees have legs and can walk around, so I suppose it makes sense.”
“It’s weird seeing you without a mask.” She said, sitting up and yawning.
“Ah, sorry. It must look unnerving, I’ll make a new one now.” Leif said, mentally peering inside his spatial ring for any remaining wood he could use. Most of it was gone, used up in the battle, he would need to restock and prepare his weapons before fighting any serious enemies. Or maybe [Create Gilded Wood] would solve that problem for him? He hadn’t decided yet.
“I guess it is a little.” Lucia admitted, rubbing the back of her head. “What were you doing?”
“Contemplating life.” Leif said, melting down a fraction of a compressed wooden sword, then reshaping the weapon, albeit slightly smaller than it was before, then starting on the mask. He had given Lucia her wooden daggers back, though it did feel strange giving a child weapons. Well, they lived in a violent world, it couldn’t be helped.
“Do you normally do that? Sit still and contemplate life, I mean?”
“Well, I don’t exactly sleep, so yes, it is how I spent large portions of my time. Perhaps too much, I have a bad habit of getting into my own head. Anyway, are you hungry?”
“No.” Lucia said, then her stomach rumbled. “Yes…” She amended sheepishly.
“Well, bad news, I don’t have any food.”
“Oh.” Lucia said, glancing around as if looking for something to eat. “I see.”
“My healing can nourish you, though not totally, it’s how Roy recovered physically so quickly, if you remember our initial meeting on the ship.”
She nodded, picking up the cloak she had used as a pillow, unfolding it and shaking out the sand. The morning was warm, and Leif stowed the cloak when she handed it to him.
“I prefer actual food, uh, no offence.” Lucia said after he had trickled healing energy into her hand. “This feels kind of weird.”
“We’ll get you something proper to eat. Can’t say I’m a fan of feeding you my blood, no matter how nourishing it may or may not be.”
Lucia gagged. “Why would you say it like that? Now I want to throw up.”
Leif snorted and placed his newly created mask, a plain oval of wood with three slits, two for his eyes and one for his mouth. “I believe it’s good for you. Assuming you're a small forest critter. The side effects are probably harmless, though judging by how some of the initial ‘test subjects’ turned out that might not be true.”
She rolled her eyes and started marching up the nearest dune. “I told you before, but I levelled up.”
“We both did.” Leif said, following. “You’re level four now, correct?”
“Yup.”
“What skills were you offered?” He asked, his longer strides easily allowing him to keep pace.
“Uhhh.” Lucia said, looking away.
“You picked one already, didn’t you?”
“Maybe…”
“I hope this isn’t you wanting to have an advantage the next time we spar.”
“No, no it’s not that. I just kind of knew which one to pick, so I just did it. The choice was between [Fade] and [Patient Ambush]. The second one felt like I had to stay still to use it properly, and standing in one place is a good way to get stabbed, so I picked [Fade]. Look, I can do this now.” She said, then, to demonstrate, she briefly went transparent. The effect ended almost immediately.
“I’m assuming it works better when you’re not standing out in the open?”
“Yeah… the skill description says it works better in darkness. Anyway, do you have skills to pick?”
“I do.” Leif confirmed, guiding them around a thick cluster of shrubs.
“Well?” Lucia asked after several seconds without him elaborating.
“Well what? I don’t want to give you an advantage when we spar.”
She stopped in place, staring at him as he continued to walk forwards. “That’s stupid! It makes even less sense than me hiding my skills!” She shouted.
Leif laughed.

Chapter Postscript:
Hello you beautiful book gremlins , hope you all had a lovely weekend.
We have a brand new skill selection, and the first of Leif's monster class. Tier 3 classes gain skills every 5 levels instead of every 2, so they're rarer, but the offering are stronger.
With that being said, I have no idea what Leif is going to pick here, so if you have any input leave a comment and it might alter the direction Leif takes his abilities.
Here's a brief rundown of what each skill is, since it wasn't expanded on in this chapter:
[Create Gilded Wood]: A variant of [Create Wood], but more 'ambery' and therefor more powerful.
[Temporal Glare]: An ocular technique that can slow targets within range.
[Reconstitute Echo]: Creating an 'echo' of something from the past. It's like necromancy but without needing a corpse!
Violence is permitted in the comments, go nuts.
Comments
I’d normally go with the most abstract option (echo) since it opens up a whole bunch of opportunities, but honestly in this case gilded wood seems the best here. It’s probably mostly just a straight buff to his existing skills, but honestly that seems pretty solid for his build. Honestly what sells it to me more is the mythical potential. This story seems to be setting Leif up as the kind of being legends and tall tales are told about (that charisma stat isn’t there for no reason :P), and that skill seems to fit that mold really well

2024-07-18 05:43:18 +0000 UTCEnemy of the Blight ey. That never popped up when he killed other humans has it? Was is just that the other times the xp was rewarded for things better than simply slaying his racial enemy, or that these specific humans are enemies of the blight? Among the 3 skills I'd eliminate [Reconstitute Echo] first as it seems the worst among them, though it would depend on how it actually worked. Even if it would simply give him free soldiers ala necromancy it doesn't mesh well with his fighting style. [Create Gilded Wood] is the best one here in my opinion. His wood manipulation is already becoming a powerful tool which would just gain a straight up buff with this. [Temporal Glare] seems like a solid pick. The issue I see with it is that it's a ocular technique and probably has to be kept active. Losing line-of-sight isn't rare. Skill strain would also quickly become an issue if it has to be kept active. If quick and sudden speed boost is necessary he can already do that. Outside of solo combat I can see [Temporal Glare] being powerful in team battles slowing down enemies would let him help without having to directly interfere in a fight. I could also see it having use if it works on objects. Slowing arrows or spells. [Create Gilded Wood] would probably have the biggest use in normal day-to-day life, though. Tough pick between the two, but I'd go with [Create Gilded Wood] as much fun as becoming Leif Uchia sounds.

2024-07-18 04:56:41 +0000 UTCThe echo would be the better bid because he could use that to summon himself(human) when he meets his sister.

2024-07-17 16:26:17 +0000 UTCEcho also has potential to fuse with the skill Leif uses to view the past (was it Amber awareness or Amber sympathy?). After all, this thing uses past echoes and that skill finds them.
Conor McGroarty
2024-07-17 01:56:08 +0000 UTCReconstitute echo would be AMAZING-imagine if he could reconstitute and echo of his past-human self? What if he could make an echo of an attack-so if someone moves through the same space they occupied whilst attacking a moment ago, and echo of their own self will attack them with the same move they used on him?? Echo has the most potential for asymmetrical use, and that’s the sort of power he’s lacking most.

2024-07-17 01:38:29 +0000 UTCohhh... what if he combined create gilded wood and manipulate wood... and then with golden physique?!
Otto Kovar
2024-07-16 19:04:15 +0000 UTCCreate gilded wood: If it's more powerful than the wood he has access to now, including his own flesh, then that makes it a potent candidate for skill fusion or a powerful aid to his ability to manipulate wood. Straightforward, but not necessarily boring. Reconstitute echo: This could be amazing for a lot of reasons. Depending on how intelligent echoes are and how they interact with the world, this skill could move the story forward in a lot of ways. Also, thematically, it's very interesting given Leif's history fighting undead (and what that could represent in the manifestation of the skill). However, I feel like it should share the same limits as necromancy. For example, echoes should be limited, persistent, and upgradeable "resources" like corpses are. Temporal glare: This feels like a skill for a caster class and not so much something for a brawler or monster that fights with fists. It would make sense as a level 30 aura though (or fused into his aura)

2024-07-16 15:27:01 +0000 UTCI just remembered that [Manipulate Wood] has become one of Leif's most used skills, I think this speaks for itself what to take, and combining the skills seems like a nobrainer
Otto Kovar
2024-07-16 05:11:17 +0000 UTCWell the Amber and Blight are trees and generally wooden. Not impossible for two different species to evolve in a similar way but more likely the Blight are an offshoot. My theory is some “young” Amber (those who wouldn’t be added to the Amber realm communication thing before the change) adapted and forsook their Amber healing for blood to survive. Alternatively, the Blight split earlier and started attacking humans for reproduction or whatever (like humans attacking them). The humans just groups the Blight and Amber together and fought back. I’m less inclined to believe humans weren’t the aggressors considering how Vevosis acts about Leif’s blood which he can only know from historical records. They rejected the thing they were hunted for and focused more on combat power and growth of numbers with the corruption of Blight.
Conor McGroarty
2024-07-15 22:22:21 +0000 UTCAt first glance I don't really like Temporal Glare. Gilded Wood would be interesting because he already makes wooden items for his allies, I suppose this would be the beginning of wooden equipment that will just be better then metal at some point. Echo looks really cool, but I am not really a summoner guy (which is how it sounds) so my vote would be gor gilded. Can you propose a voting pool on patreon?
bobby2dreki
2024-07-15 18:16:12 +0000 UTCReconstitute Echo could combine well with his investigation skill, allowing him to show others what he sees from the past (assuming he can’t already do that).

2024-07-15 17:54:21 +0000 UTCI’m going with gilded wood followed by echo and glare last

2024-07-15 17:48:46 +0000 UTCI vote echo but not super strong opinion
Conrad Manaugh
2024-07-15 16:00:05 +0000 UTCEcho or gilded thematically. Gilded is boring though so, probably echo we can explore other ability types and then merge it.
Eli Loeb
2024-07-15 14:32:01 +0000 UTCBetween the three skills: Temporal Glare seems the most niche, and while it would be useful to slow down fast opponents I'm not sure if its exceptionally useful. It could potentially be combined with other skills though. Like maybe with his aura so Leif could cause a slow down bubble effect with his aura. Gilded wood feels like it could be really useful but also super open ended. Like is it better than his current body? Could it be combined with his body skill so that he could reform and shape his body far more flexibly? This just has a ton of questions associated with it, but huge amounts of potential. Reconstitute Echoes...could potentially be super powerful. Both for information gathering (reconstitute a machine/book/person and ask general questions maybe) or for emotional purposes (reconstitute the memory of his mother/past in Varan) and for combat (reconstitute clones for distractions and outright fighting). I think I would vote for Echoes first, followed by Gilded wood. Still up to the author but they all have potential
Maestro
2024-07-15 14:12:34 +0000 UTCWould the echo allow him to go back to the temple from the beginning and finish the trials for the legendary class?
Kitbashjay
2024-07-15 13:51:47 +0000 UTCIf Écho copy 'something' from the past, not necesseraly something he defeated, he can use his OP enemies as template. And it might even apply to the Amber trees. Also, did I read the subtext correctly ? Did some of the amber become the Blight with their hatred ?
guillaume nguyen
2024-07-15 13:37:00 +0000 UTCReconstitute echo feels like it has the most direct combat applications. Having essentially time clones that can beat the shit out of people sounds strong to me. Create Gilded wood is also good just for sheer versatilities sake. Temporal Glare is strong but it has a few drawbacks backs that make me think Echo would be overall better in combat in wholistic sense. We’ve seen how strong Heras and the blood guy clones are.
Baconwargod
2024-07-15 12:42:02 +0000 UTCNot really a fan of the echo just because lief has never really been the summoning type. Temperal Glare seems useful for powerful fast opponents but Lief has put so much effort into becoming durable that I’m not really sure if he’d need something like that in the long run. My pick is Create Gilded Wood. Makes all of his utility stronger.
Adunn
2024-07-15 12:37:13 +0000 UTCI think create gilded wood helps play to some of his strongest attacks and provides a clear merging path with wood manipulation. Depending on its properties it could potentially be used to reinforce his own body. Also provides a path that isn't so steeped in violence that might speak well to him.
Matt M
2024-07-15 12:21:13 +0000 UTCI also like the idea of Leif leaning into his crafter-side, from his possibilities. Not in a resentful manner but as someone that wants to build things that last and aid. Building houses and walls to keep your people from harm. Creating shields and swords to give them power over their fate.
Otto Kovar
2024-07-15 11:35:54 +0000 UTC"You seem to forget that he has never made wood constructs/structure using his own body..." - > Leif often takes inspiration from proposed skills. It simply haven't ever occured to him that something like "amber" wood even exists or is better than normal wood. "Also as it seems the ability is a poor fit for his character, as strong a synergy his skills may be with the echo. Creating something lasting seems more useful, the echo from its makeup seems temporary." -> Army creation skills seem to be rather widespread like Hera's light constructs or that dark water Blade eldritch constructs. Leif needs his own counter against them otherwise he will be swarmed. Also, echo skill is flexible as hell. What if Leif could infuse "sentient" echo into wood construct? Infuse echoes with life energies to make them stronger? etc. Imagine wood golems made out of "amber" (leif limbs) wood, infused with life energy and echoes to grant it faux intelligence and skills. Possibilities are unlimited.
Rubeno
2024-07-15 10:14:49 +0000 UTCLeif’s usage of wood has often been one off wood bombs loaded with vitality and growing like crazy. Not like Leif is making the “one true wood sword Excalibur” as he uses his fists. Leif is using wood bombs (will Leif ever get the chance to implant one in a torso and rip someone from the inside?), wood projectiles, and terrain manipulation/use. Since his class prefers unarmed/unarmored stuff, anything “lasting” is wasted on him. Plus it isn’t like Leif is a crafter either.
Conor McGroarty
2024-07-15 10:08:17 +0000 UTCwhen did MC ever create something from his own body? he literally is stripping his weapons for material, why is he not using his own body? It seems he cannot detach wood to create structures.
Otto Kovar
2024-07-15 10:05:19 +0000 UTCYou seem to forget that he has never made wood constructs/structure using his own body... Also as it seems the ability is a poor fit for his character, as strong a synergy his skills may be with the echo. Creating something lasting seems more useful, the echo from its makeup seems temporary.
Otto Kovar
2024-07-15 10:03:27 +0000 UTCthe most scaling would be reconstitute echo, if his benevolent action can enhance his creations. There is a lot of synergy in his noble class and having underlings. It seems really powerful. But I am not a fan of relying on underlings, they have uses, but being a strong being, means less reliance. In my opinion it would fit him more to take create gilded wood. Many have stated that Leif could just take his own body and create better wood constructs. As it stands he has only been able to manipulate "his wood" as long as it is attached. If he could detach wood and still use it afterwards he wood have done so(i hate these jokes) Him creating wood that seems to scale with his strength seems more reliable, he could create armor and equipment for his allies, better protecting them, maybe as extensions of his body they benefit from other boni, but i wood not hold my breath. To my perceptions it fits better with Leif, he was abhorred by the thought of creating offspring amber trees, though that may have changed. He is a social being and creating objects that help his friends seems ideal to my mind and to his personality. AS powerful the Echos could be they seems a great fit to his skills but a poor fit for his character.
Otto Kovar
2024-07-15 09:59:41 +0000 UTCEcho, plays in with other temporal skills he has and works better thematically.

2024-07-15 09:28:54 +0000 UTCMC can buff and heal others. Getting pseudo necromancy skill will allow him to always have "comrades" to buff at ready lol.

2024-07-15 09:09:04 +0000 UTCI'd say take the echo one it probably is the most flexible skill and also fits thematically to his character.

2024-07-15 09:03:07 +0000 UTCWell first off, create gilded wood should be out of the running considering Leif can more or less just use his own body parts for Amber wood if he really needs to without taking up a skill slot. Having a way to always secure wood when you didn’t pack enough in storage is okay but Leif is wood. Even if it has unique properties, there are many trees and Leif is wood that gets better with level. Now the other two are time aspect and thus rare and powerful. Lazy (slow) eyes seem rather promising considering that Leif’s alacrity needs work. Why get faster when he can make others slower? But there is the issue of Leif likely needing to look at them, something hard to do in higher level fights where Leif will be facing people experienced and fast enough to stay out of sight (plus it could be indiscriminate with everything in view but boy would it be a power move to be able to slow enemies and allies all across the horizon). Not even considering the fact that Leif probably won’t be able to use that when settled as tree doesn’t have eyes. Unlikely Leif would fight while settled as his build is bipedal but his Amber predecessor proved that being a stationary defense is potent as the Amber made them pay. I’m assuming Vevosis has records of humans trying to catch the Amber and them dying greatly with no gains as the Amber burn their vitality. The monster factions took advantage (Blight probably an offshoot of Amber) as the prick said that they caused great harm to humans, nevermind that they were aggressors. That would line up with his policy of “sustainability” and how it just seemed personal (Amber’s enemies might not have been humans but probably is). Now the “echo” skill is very interesting and has great potential especially with Leif’s core skill buffing others. From my point of view, Leif’s greatest strengths is his durability, regeneration and buffing (plus vitality drain to power it all like a dynamo). He is being set up as the linchpin of an elite squad or faction that literally won’t die if he doesn’t. Leif essentially has to make himself immortal and those around him. So being able to spam time copies of your opponents or whatever (items? saves on expenses for bombs if he can time echo them and especially if he can cheese it with seals, emblems and such) is big. Even if it has a restrictions like needing an energy investment or only able to work on things weaker than Leif. Imagine Leif copying Vevosis and having the copy gimp the dude’s skills? Leif would have an easier time killing and draining him if he had to contend with himself. That isn’t even considering if Leif is able to store or keep them active for extended periods. Leif can summon echoes for suicide attacks, moving points for the Amber path (just tap them with his foot and you have a mobile anchor that Leif can teleport to in battle or have many marked and scatter while he buys time and then ports) and heal them while they harass. Now I might be overestimating its potential but still think it has the most synergy with Leif’s build. Any more wood stuff can be gotten from a potential future Druid class and Leif’s body. Slow eyes is simple and straightforward but I just can’t see (ha) it being enough of a game changer to survive punching above his level for true speed demons. Those people would figure out flaws. Like maybe you actually have to see the person and thus an assassin can fade like Lucia and blind Leif, bright lights (flash bangs) or just darkness. Could also just be so fast that the difference doesn’t matter and you can always stay out of his field of view. Echo on the other hand can increase Leif’s power and survivability by making expendable mooks that may turn out to be a time army (army of Ram) when at full potential. But really that trick of marking multiple time clones and making them scatter and choosing to port to one with the Path is great in this current situation.

2024-07-15 08:47:22 +0000 UTCIt's kind of redundant as MC already can obtain wood and wood manipulation isn't exactly MC focus. Also if MC wants "amber" wood he only needs to chop his own limbs to get it lol. From practical reasons Temporal Glare is the best as the likes of Hera are MC absolute counter. Even at the same lvl I don't see MC winning against Hera. But my heart goes to [Reconstitute Echo] as the past is MC foundation of his character and species. Also, there is this common theme in fantasy where people from primordial times were stronger than modernity that lost things which seems to be a case in this story as knowledge about building the system was forgotten. This pseudo necromancy not only is versatile tool that MC can use to patch his weaknesses but could also lead to interesting interactions. Maybe MC can also "heal" echos the same way he uses his life powers to enhance wood?
