Antifada's History is a Weapon 15: On the Labor Question w/ Matt Christman

In light of the depressing denouement of last year's railroad conflict, Sean and Matt sit down, in person at last, to discuss the deep history behind how American organized labor got so disorganized and why the labor movement hasn't moved in decades.

Why was it that, in the United States, workers institutions had trouble evolving past the infancy of narrow, sectoral, decentralized craft unionism towards broad-based, nationally-coordinated industrial unionism? How did capital, in the face of militant organizing, help choose the weaker of the two as their partner to bargain with? In what ways is worker self-organization in this country truly, as our enemies always say, anti-American? And importantly what is to be done now that private sector union density is so low, workers institutions so captured and the national labor relations regime has fallen apart?

Love the show, great topic and guest. My only gripe is how Sean pronounces Toledo, like the city in Spain instead of the industrial wasteland of Northwestern Ohio. I learned how to pronounce it from the guy who almost turned me trans, Klinger from MASH.

I dont know if you guys read these, but i really wanna thank you for clearly explaining why ive always felt this massive disappointment in American unions and their supposed champions, especially in wake of the railway strike that wasnt. Also im pretty sure this is the second time youve defended yourselves from accusations of accelerationism, which isnt really a thing imo. Its just acknowledging reality.

Paris Commune: 1871 St. Louis Commune: 1877 Good pod but I think it’s important not to overstate the case that the United States is historically “behind” European development, it was integrated and integral in the global workers movement, hell the First International was headquartered in New York for many years. It’s not like there’s a pre-existent working class toward which political consciousness teleologically must cohere; that politics is doing the making (and unmaking). Also, the European model shouldn’t be seen as a model either, the French CGT began as somewhat equivalent to our IWW (ie syndicalist) and now they’re held up as the arch state collaborators in pacifying 68.
