Talkin' Tina - The Cuban Uprising of J11

For the 7th episode of Talkin' Tina, the Antifada side project where we discuss the history and politics of America Latina, we chat with a comrade from Oakland about the uprising that occurred in Cuba on July 11th, 2021, via his interview with an anarchist from the island.

The interview can be read in full here: https://www.sm28.org/articles/j11-the-return-of-the-cuban-proletariat/

ah, I'll have to take a listen to the other interview then!

The Fine Art Revolution

how is that a disagreement? i state that most of what you can find about J11 is propaganda of one sort or another, and how the immiseration that exists in cuba is US foreign policy. the linked interview also acknowledges this. see for yourself

The Antifada

i think the linked interview provides a marxist analysis of why and how working-class people in cuba rioted and the flaws/limit of the uprising. sadly the only other "marxist" takes on J11 i've seen is the standard knee-jerk "must be fake/CIA manipulation, nothing to see here, don't talk about it" take. anything else to recommend?

The Antifada

classic anarchists...

The Fine Art Revolution

understandable with the time constraint. But I have to disagree on your opinion regarding the CIA. There is a heavy, well-documented influence from the CIA on cuba, and the media we consume regarding cuba. I'm not saying these people are paid actors or that they have no agency, no, simply that external forces are playing with their angst. Shrugging this off is not dialectical, materially-based, etc.

The Fine Art Revolution

Can you get a marxist on to talk about Cuba? Seems like the anarchist solution is to shrug and shake their head

ethan

the uprising in cuba did occur with large participation. ignoring that like most of the left does, or assuming everyone participated because they were funded or misled by the CIA, are not serious approaches to the question. there's only so much we could do in an hour but we did cover, if briefly, most of your concerns

The Antifada

I'm normally a fan of most of what you guys put out there, but this interview is very concerning. There was a lot of talk about things that cubans don't have access to, and how this validates J11 - masks, shampoo, foods, etc, but very little discussion on why this is. The US still imposes an illegal international embargo that severely limits their access to these basic goods. It is not a failure of the cuban government, but a causality of this illegal embargo. Simply trading with a capitalistic government, does not make a sovereign nation inherently capitalistic, or discredit the revolutionary government ideals. They are struggling to build up their means of production due to the embargo. Also how can you speak about the failures of Cuba without bringing up the cia-backed propaganda machine that is still actively trying to overthrow the government both abroad and in Cuba itself? I distinctly remember seeing overwhelming support of the cuban government in the days and weeks following this uprising, but this was not highlighted in US media. This was also the same time the "Havana Syndrome" nonsense was being pushed on us from the US state department. J11 was most likely directly linked to CIA connections. It is no secret the CIA uses anarchist groups to sow discord in any leftist movement or existing government. Casually joking about this and shrugging it off was odd. Additionally, you can't compare the incarceration rates in Cuba as it is a very tiny island relative to the US or china. Statistical analysis doesn't work like that... Lastly, I think they handled the pandemic quite well. No one likes wearing masks and being told what to do while walking on the beach.
