Ep 165 - Born In Flames w/ Aaron Thorpe

Jamie is joined by pal-of-the-show Aaron Thorpe (@paradoomer) to discuss Lizzie Borden's 1983 feminist sci-fi film "Born In Flames." Ten years after a "war of liberation" that established a social democratic government in the United States, things are still not great for women, especially queer, black, working class women! In a story that remains relevant to this day, the film follows the radical organizers of the Women's Army as they fight for true equality.

Hearing you two talk about how Vampire Castle is misread and/or sucks was a breath of fresh air. It's a terrible loss when a beloved writer passes, but it's also bad when everyone references them all the time to bolster whatever argument they want to make against people they don't like. They aren't around to clarify or correct the record. I would love to hear you all revisit the essay.

BROTHER TO BROTHER

Born in Flames rules! Katheryn Bigelow is weird tho. First three movies she directed all absolutely slap – Near Dark (one of the few movies about vampires in poverty), Point Break, and Strange Days. Then.. ??? the Hurt Locker? Even setting horrible politics aside we're stuck with Jeremy Renner forever now fuck that 100%

sure winner
