Early bird: New C64 CIAs & CPU are real!
Added 2023-04-14 01:58:19 +0000 UTC
Coming to you a little later than I planned due to some boring tech issues, we're back to the classic ЯR style content with a deep dive exploration of the brand new J-CIA and J-CPU chips that were the missing link in finally creating a 100% new Chipset-based Commodore 64! Woohoo!
I also introduce #SassyPeri as I respond to some of the less than pleasant comments received on the previous video on this topic. Obviously none of these apply to you, but I hope you at least find it entertaining!

This will premiere publicly on Saturday and I'll let you have the link shortly if you'd like to watch again and join me and the devs of the products shown in the live chat 👍🕹️
Thank you for your ongoing support!

Liked your response to the haters... they can all go pound sand. Anyway, thanks for sharing. I don't get over to Patreon much to comment, but wanted to give a quick thanks. I am a huge nostalgia freak for my C64, Amiga, and life in general between 1984 and 1994.

Thanks mate! Lovely to hear from you, and so glad you liked this one so much. With this kind of gear to play with most of the video just writes itself ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also glad you liked Sassyfractic. You're right of course, you can't win an argument with such people, so indirect anonymous addressing I felt worked best. I did get a few comments not to make a habit of it, and I hadn't planned to give them ongoing energy, but I daresay Sassyfractic will make a return very occasionally ;)
I confess I haven't done side-by-side comparisons with filter-heavy stuff. Personally if it just "sounds great" then I'm happy, but I can totally appreciate more comparisons would be helpful to many. When I have a moment I'll fire up Delta. Good tip!
Thanks and love to Adiefractic as always <3

I've just got round to watching this (bit late, I know) and I have to say this has to be one of your best and most entertaining videos so far, Peri! I absolutely loved your response to the haters, and I'm equally loving that you're showing more attitude in this episode - it suits you, your presentation, and the content really well. This has got to be the best way to deal with it without engaging with them directly (which as I've personally found is usually a losing battle and saps far too much energy - especially as the same comments will just keep popping up from different haters anyway). Respond in your videos with humour and a little attitude, and you're covered - it's incredibly entertaining for the rest of us! SuperTekBoy commented on your sassiness. Let’s have more of that!
I've yet to check the YouTube comments on this episode, but here's hoping the haters made it a little farther into the episode before they started blasting you with more negatives. Mark my words though, if they find nothing technical to complain about - then they'll turn to your glasses or something else and blast you for that instead. :)
The production, delivery and music used in this episode were just perfect IMHO, and the final build looks and sounds amazing (absolutely love that Commodore badge). Well done on spotting the NTSC/PAL issue as well. I never would've thought of that!
I'd like to know how the ARMSID's filters perform on some of the filter-heavy tracks, as so far I've heard nothing apart from my original C64 get this right. It's a tough one though, as the tolerance between filters across C64s varied wildly, and what’s “right” for me might be “wrong” for someone else. I think I was just lucky that I must’ve had one with a similar tolerance as Rob Hubbard's, as I remember hearing the same tunes on friends’ C64s back in the day, and they just didn’t sound right - in fact many had sections where notes were just being dropped entirely due to the filter inconsistencies.
A good test is the Rob Hubbard tune from Delta that plays when you complete the game, as that's something most struggle with as it sweeps the cutoff frequency throughout the tune. Also, the Lightforce soundtrack (in parts - the bridge, I think) is a tough one to get right. I'll have to do a little Googling to see if I can find anyone who's tested those. That's the only thing to-date that spoils my enjoyment of the C64 on newer hardware, as the tunes from games I loved just don’t sound quite the same.
