Finding Otto: Band of Brothers 2024 | Time Team

We have a special treat for you now.

Sometimes, people question the value of archaeology when relating to events in living memory. However, this video demonstrates how enriching it can be when finds are married up to their original context, through ongoing connections today.

At the end of this year's Digging Band of Brothers excavation at Aldbourne, the team discovered a rusty dog tag belonging to Otto May of Fox Company.

Some further digging unearthed his grandchilden, Greg and Bryan May, who joined Operation Nightingale's Richard Osgood and Giselle Kiraly to discover more about his wartime experiences.

My father was in the US Navy for 30 years. For a couple of years my parents, brother and I lived in a quonset hut in neighborhood of quonset huts on NAS Barber's Point on the island of Oahu, HI. This was base housing for enlisted men and their families. They were very like the Nissan huts in your Band of Brothers dig. Of course our hut had a living room, eat-in kitchen, both and 2 bedrooms. My brother and I had lots of kids to play with and we loved dumpster diving when a family was transfered to another base. We found a lot of toys and games. Barber's Point was decommissioned about 40 years ago. Thank you for a wonderful series.

I have my grandfather's WWI US dog tag. He was drafted into the Navy and because he was a violinist he ended up playing for the troops in the UK and France. I found a photo image of his draft registration on ancestry.com. His dog tag is one of my most prized things...110 years old. Heart warming to read how much other people have found joy in the same history paths.

To be clear are you asking about The patreon post or the silent transition to sketchfab? I took me 3 goes to work out I was suddenly on a separate site. Worrying for interweb security if the silent tansition to another site is intended. If sketchfab is supposed to be accessible without another account I say yeeha

Steve Prowse

I'm looking forward to the 3D model of the dog tag. Great follow up on the the outcome of the dig. Oops I hadn't looked hard enough. The 3d model is awesome. Glad I could already read back to front and upside down. To bloody old to learn that skill :) Hopefully someone in the US will scan the Purple Heart commendation as it would go well alongside the 3d print / original in the museum.

Thank you for this content. Respect and appreciation for all.

Loved this - what wonderful connections you have made!

I just had the same thing happen. I was using Safari and to even try and go to the Patreon home page, nothing looked right. I switched browsers to get a true login and no problem to view videos. I'm thinking I should clear the cache on the Safari when trying it again.

Betsey Noble

Hi Jim, sorry to hear this. We've raised this with Patreon support and are investigating the cause. We'll reach out to you directly with any updates. In the meantime, please do let us know if the access returns. Thank you

Time Team

I keep getting a message to sign in but I am signed in. I cannot watch the Otto video

Jim Lady

Beyond brilliant! So evocative.

Mike Wraith

I just know how much this meant to his family!

Terri Brown

It's wonderful that the diggers found such great items that they understood (too well). .. and that you located Otto May's family, who had so much information and the great artifacts.

Norine Nagle

Wonderful programme, amazing story and such great people. Thanks for all the hard work in putting it together.

JUDITH COOKE

What a great story. Brings home the reality that we're all connected to the past and a little digging while help us find out how.

Richard Yoast

Gosh! Absolutely fabulous! I found this not only informative but moving. It's wonderful to see people of my sons' age still keen to uncover their forefathers' story. Please Time Team, keep it up!

Valerie Aston

Thanks! It’s a great story!!

James Leighninger

Hi James, we might release this post to the wider public at a later date (TBC). Thanks

Theresa Cashin

That was so amazing, really loved this. It brought the history to life and was quite emotional. More please β€οΈπŸ‘πŸ‘Š

Des Doherty

It is wonderful to see how much the family has saved and how engaged Otto May’s grandsons are in understanding the history and keeping his story alive. Thanks Time Team for closing the loop and sharing the family’s stories with us.

Andrea Gallagher

Will this feature be available in future to non-Patreon members? Have family members who would enjoy it. Will show them at Christmas, if not.

James Leighninger

This is exactly what I asked for of the new Time Team - the extra stories of the finds. DNA. life and connecting finds to people, generations, nations, etc. leads Time Team and it's members (even non-members) down paths that would probably not have been trodden. More please.

Kenneth Brawn

That was awsome

Belinda Brooks

This is so powerful! WOW! They really need to pack all the uniform items in acid free tissue in acid free boxes and keep them dry and clean. Then they will last. It is so wonderful that you were able to find the family and that they are a family who all knew Otto and care so much about his history. As soon as I saw the discovery of the dog tag, this is exactly what I so hoped would happen. I hope the grandsons both get to Auldbourne!

Ann Wagner

I am a Yank vet and bit of a WWII buff. The U.S. Army scandalously did not ensure front line soldiers received proper clothing and footware during the 1944-45 winter; kit that was available in theatre. Rubber over-boots are a prime example; they were widely available in the rear areas but hard to find up front.

Eggs Ackley

Thank you Time Team and Operation Nightingale. A simple artifact from war and the stories of the people it connects past to present has renewed my commitment to treat others with kindness and compassion.

Alice Meyer

This was amazing. Just to see the connections and how they remembered their grandfather. Keeping his memory alive by researching . I couldn't stop smiling while watching this episode. GREAT job to everyone involved!

Wow. Loved this!!

Meg

If recall correctly someone hit on the idea of using the spare burlap sacking that was lying around to line their boots and insulate their feet against the cold. It worked a treat!

David Ulke

Love the connection with Otto May's family. This episode has been extra special as my dad never spoke of his war experiences with the 442. Thank you!

JanD

What a brilliant addition to the Time Team programmes, so emotional, and by the end I was there sharing the emotions. Many Many Thanks to the whole team involved in putting this together.

Mike Darby

Great follow up. Wouldn't it be interesting to build a display of some of Ottos gear in the museum onsite?

Elizabeth West

Thank you, one and all. Fascinating! Maybe your possible visit could coincide with the 2025 dig...

Lynn Edwards

Fascinating conversation. I love these family connections.

Wessex-Wyvern

This was such a good watch! I love hearing what further research has turned up about artifacts you guys dig up. And it was so great that the family kept all those related items to their ancestor's war time activities. Thank you!

Cris Yoder

Wonderful stuff - but what was the story about the boots?

Derek Thom

Fantastic discussion. Let's hope there's a followup, sincs there seems a lot more to develop.

Alan

Absolutely brilliant..πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§
