Very nice.

What you want is the 'Expert' Badge as each denotes how well or high you have qualified on a given weapon. Marksman is the lowest level. there are also clasps for rifle, grenade, pistol. As someone else noted: though can also be 'earned' by Officers they are not traditionally worn by Officers. I still have mine from decades ago from when I was enlisted.

The model is sweet, though I have to say the episode itself wasn't a favourite of mine. From the uninspiring and only semi-audible "ferry" opening through the occasional factual mistake and weird music to me being somewhat surprised that the experts (?) struggled with identifying an object so obvious as this badge is.

Expert Marsman Badge with Machine Gun Clasp - By unwritten tradition, although officers qualify with their weapon, they do not wear qualification badges. The Maltese Cross motif is taken from the cap badges of British Rifle Regiments https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marksmanship_badges_(United_States)

Hi Andy. Yes it’s certainly not a cheap flimsy/throwaway kind of item. I suppose they were cheap to produce in many thousands but does have a quality feel to it.

Many thanks for the feedback Mark - this was a lovely object to model. Andy

Hi Alex. I also found this a really interesting find. When Time Team asked me to model it I looked at a lot of reference photos - some had several additional bars - they must have looked really impressive. They also seem to be really well made - a fitting tribute to those who were awarded them. Andy

Last nights episode was really interesting as I have one of these and despite visiting many military museums and collections I have never seen one like it before. Mine does not have the laurel wreath around it though and is black with the raised bits plain metal. It has two “bars”, one for rifle and one for sub machine gun. My grandfather used to trade or swap uniform buttons and cap badges with troops he met or played cards with in camp.

That is so fantastic. Thanks for sharing
