Time Team Special: Rediscovering Ancient Britain (2012) - FULL EPISODE

It's the end of July, and just time for another Classic Special for our Patreon members.

In this gem from the archives, we head to the South Dorset Ridgeway, an ancient route littered with prehistoric monuments, not far from Time Team's recent dig overlooking Corfe Castle.

Alex Langlands explores the ridgeway on foot. Meanwhile Phil Harding puts his tools to the test... but what makes a better axe, bronze or flint?

What's more, for those interested in the notion of 'phenomenology' (as introduced by Lawrence during our Sutton Hoo coverage), this episode explores the concept in more detail.

COMING UP: Big Announcement and New Goals!

One year on from launching our 10,000 members target, we're preparing to announce some very exciting developments for the next 12 months. These include our next goals, new digs and the release of more Classic episodes.

So, if you've enjoyed Time Team over the last year, we can promise you're in for some real treats ahead!

Unique format for a specia, but loved it. It seems like forebear of Sir Tony’s walking history series.

I enjoyed this special. Just inland from Mary Anning territory :-). I thought Alex Langlands made a great point about experiencing the landscape in order to deepen our understanding of prehistoric peoples.

Andy Quick

What a great format. The content was top shelf and well presented. It inspires me to hire a local guide and hike it “me self” (in the parlance of Phil H). Cheers from Texas.

Mark Gaither

He'll always be discount Stuart, though I'm sure he'd do well presenting some other show

Alfons

A beautiful special. I'd love to walk the Ridgeway.

Time Team as it was! Collegial, nostalgic, presented without false enthusiasm or geewhizzing, and full of information about new concepts in the science of archaeology. A beautiful episode. Thank you

As I was watching it, I found myself wishing for an update — how has our understanding changed since this was filmed? Have new findings or techniques confirmed or up-ended any of the speculations made?

Fantastic episode. I grew up in the area but don't remember seeing this episode before. Thanks for re-sharing it.

What a smashing program, seeing Alex and Phil explaining there thoughts during the process was fascinating. The people the met up with along the way, really did make it all come together. Well done everyone for another fascinating program. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

I loved this classic episode. I didn't know that Alex Langlands worked with Time Team. I first learned of Alex in the "Historic Farms" series with Peter Ginn and Ruth Goodman. What happened in the "disastrous s19 of time team"?

Cate Abbott

Miles and his ear-flap hats lol Some things will never change.

Rick Doner

I always liked Alex and wish he was a bigger part in time team. Stuart Ainsworth was the OG and best lumps and bumps reader but Alex was badly served by being in the disastrous s19 of time team
