Dig Watch | Princely Burial Site: Day Two

It's our second day here in the Cotswolds, and despite the weather the archaeology is already paying dividends.

Being Time Team, though, it's not exactly straightforward to decipher. What we can be sure of is an exciting week ahead.

Even better, we're pleased to welcome Jackie McKinley to site, who has already made some crucial discoveries. It's time for more Dig Watch!

wayne melberg

Bron Lloyd

That is some cliff hanger! Wow!

Eelco Kruidenier

Fabulous as usual ❤️

michelle keith

Wow, just wow! Really exciting.

Terhi Törmänen

Great update Helen despite the sogginess!

Difort

Wow. This is FASCINATING!

Anita C

That overview of the trench so clearly showed those grave cuts. And why is that pink stone there? You couldn't write better cliff hangers.

Carl Johnson

So exciting!! Looking forward to the next update

Debbie Williams

Wow! Wonderful exciting update. I am honestly beginning to feel like an active member of "Time Team" Can't wait for day 3! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳👍👍👍👍👍👍

Marilyn

My old SouthTexas bones hurt for any of "you'll " working in shorts and rain gear.

Priscilla Waller

Once again a great snippet, can't wait for the full episode. Every dig starts with Questions, but having the flexibility to adapt to findings is what makes these shows great, and always leaves us waiting for more 😎

Neil Graham

As this is Project Nightingale & Cotswold dig, I think Kerry will not have had time to get everything in place, but looking at the soil, it would still be a wet trench.

Neil Graham

Thrilling! What a cliffhanger! And such intrigue…

Doug Mackey

Is the trench too large to cover with a tent? Seems like I have seen that in other Time Teams when it rains....

Fiona D

Helen is great and Jackie is always a treat. Exciting developments!

Elisabeth

I love seeing Helen playing host. Can't wait to see what's under the big pink stone!

KP

Great insights into the dig. I am pleased that dig watch is starting to share more details of finds.

David Boon

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Cheryl Kurucz

We have been having similar weather in Melbourne! Hope everything goes well for the remainder of the dig.

JUDITH COOKE

Oh wow. Maybe another Roman sarcophagus but this time with the lid in situ! Exciting.

Amethyst Gray

Oh Wow! I thought the England game was exciting but I would swap my armchair for a pair of wellies and a trowel any day. Can’t wait to see what the ‘pink slab’ reveals. Best of luck to all the team, you are quite brilliant.

Irene Daly

I am wondering about the depth of the cremated remains in relation to the body. Is there any indication of how much later they were added or are they contemporary? Could they have been a momento mori carried by the deceased? It is so very intriguing.

Clive McIntyre

Wow the excitement builds!!!

Neil

Oh that's fantastic! I also had a thought on Jackie's cremated bone, would another possibility be that they are part of the remains of someone who moved away and then after death some of their cremation were brought back to their birthplace to be buried with parents/relations?

Christopher Samuel

Thank you for sharing this interesting detail and prospect. Looking forward to Naomi's float disco/veries.

Graham Stokes

Really exciting stuff. Shame about the weather. I hope it brightens up for you!

Dario

Adding to my previous post, and cremation. Back in 2000 we went on a 'Granny Sprinkling Trip' - dropping handfuls of our lovely Welsh Granny around her beloved childhood/yound adult locations in Swansea and The Gower... Nowadays the cremation process is very refined, so no bits of discernable bone (thank goodness!) But I can quite see that our ancestors may have done something similar...

Carrie Hartley

Can’t wait for tomorrow! 👍

Jen A

It's getting Exciting!!!! Pink Stone Day tomorrow LOL

Chris Bate

Fantastic discoveries, what will be next?

Alan McMillan

Bring your own canoe, deep wellies!

Alan McMillan

I could imagine carrying one of Jackie's momento mori packets as a personal keepsake and then being buried with it when my time came.

Jee

Ooh.. reminders of Glastonbury 1997..nursing with #FestivalMedicalServices. Our tents were 2 in below the mud. Going to the loo was a no-go.. we were creative.. 😬X

Carrie Hartley

I am very excited to be a part, in a way, of this dig. Thanks Time Team!

Richard Kaskeski

I was excavating at Roman Magna on Hadrian's Wall in May and we discovered 7 cremation burials, the way they were excavated and processed is exactly how Jackie explains it.

Simon Orchard

It just getter better and better!

Nigel Sadler

Interesting! I’ve not heard of these momento mori burials before. A flotation birthday treat for Naomi! Looking forward to the rest of the week.

Rachel

The enthusiasm, knowledge, and wisdom between Helen, Richard, and Jackie bodes well for the Cotswold site. Definitely Time Team invigorating!!! Dig on!

JanD

This site seems to have a penchant for the unusual, can't wait to see what they're all about. It must be difficult working in the rain, but being in a drought-striken heat dome on the US east coast, I have to say it's very refreshing just seeing all the rain and long sleeves. But hopefully weather improves for the dig, this site is too intriguing to be hamstrung by bad weather.

Elaine P

Or maybe the elders were cremated, and the later generation had the cremated bones buried with them?

Wessex-Wyvern

This is so thrilling! So many interesting questions. I hope the weather is kinder tomorrow.

Wessex-Wyvern

Interesting features. I hope it will lead to great discoveries !

Jacques Pictet

I feel sorry sitting back, enjoying the action from my dry home, but OMG what action there is! Holy wow, more questions... 🤔

Patricia Amero

I loved the cliff hanger at the end…

Todd Gillespie

Is it possible the cremation is of their kids and once a parent dies, they put pices of their kids with the parent's burial?

CCZ

Can't wait to see more on the circular feature tomorrow.

Zoe Propper

Beach shelter to protect the tech from the rain...genius!

Zoe Propper

I hope the weather was kinder today. It was a bit better here, in Reading
