Early bird: Surprising Solitaire Story

Dear Supporters

Let's discover the most unexpected reason computer Solitaire was invented - and it has nothing to do with Microsoft Windows!

Some of you may already know this but I tried to tell it in a fun way even if you do. The video turned out much shorter than I expected, but I told the story I wanted to tell and it clocked in at 7 minutes. I kind of like the succinctness for a change and hope you do too!

Very interesting! I’m glad it sparked some fond memories back to the surface. For me that’s what it’s all about.

What a fascinating insight into the origins of computer Solitaire! 😃 When I watched that interview with David Crane, I had a similar reaction to yours when he said he had invented Solitaire for the computer platforms of the time. I remember playing a version of computer based Solitaire only one year prior to the Microsoft Windows version; it was a game from Sierra Entertainment called Hoyle's Official Book of Games: Volume 1 on my DOS based-PC. It had several different card games, of course, but it also included Klondike Solitaire. It even played a dancing joker character when you won the game accompanied by some catchy music! I still have this game on my modern day PC, running through DOSBox. 🙂 I really enjoyed this episode because it brought back so many of my own memories of my first experience with computer Solitaire. Of course, I've played the (several) versions of Solitaire over the years on Windows platforms since, but since my Dad was the one to introduce me to that particular version of the game, that's the one I remember most fondly. 😊 Thank you so much, Christian, for this incredibly informative and entertaining video. Have a good one, and take care. 🙂

Cool I had the Nimbus at school too! I’m hoping to acquire one and one day do some videos about it. Probably next year at least...

Well I never knew that. I’m going to hunt the Amiga version down now. Spectrum Holobyte... who would release ‘Star Trek : A Final Unity’ which was the first PC game I ever bought. We had an RM Nimbus network at my school, and it could just about run Windows 3.1 and Solitaire. Happy Days.
