This time, we’re revisiting the two episodes we recorded with Eleanor Hingley — “Small Town Horror” and “Metafiction and Horror”. These were both broad topics, with lots of examples from media, and we didn’t have time to get into everything we had planned to discuss.
The episodes also inspired a lot of chat on our Discord server. We go through some comments from listeners and offer our own thoughts.

On the topic of the ‘company town’ being the initial reconstruction of historic examples to be built by the tech magnates today in an effort to forge their technate- one should pay attention to the efforts of the tech oligarchs making moves to dismantle democracy and place themselves in the position to be the new standard of governance. This becomes more poignant as of this AM on Monday 8/4/25: on Friday morning the market was in free fall after Trump fired the Head of the Bureau Of Labor and Statistics because ‘She was a Biden appointee and therefore lying about the jobs report that had a huge downturn in employment.’ This, BTW is an accusation of serious economic treason- the equivalent in terms of the potential damage to the GDP as scuttling a Navy Destroyer. A huge accusation that has serious implications. And yet… today the market rallies behind the AI claims of Zuckerberg. More than ever this looks like a coordinated dance - a handoff of legitimacy in real fiscal terms from state to technate. Parapolitical meta fictions are our new reality.
