Here's how I tend to identify weird science. It uses some aspect that has no basis in reality and is unachievable regardless of advancements in technology. Rocks that have an innate anti-gravity property, interacting with the supernatural, telepathy/mental powers, etc. My favorite example of a mainstream Weird Science property is Ghost Busters.
