Added 2020-08-25 10:13:29 +0000 UTC
We’re back with another of our lockdown specials. Once again, we’re devouring books like hungry bookworms, hoping they’ll give us ideas for games.
These lockdown episodes are a way of thanking our Patreon backers for sticking with us through these difficult times. We are releasing them on the off-weeks between our normal episodes.
If you would like to gain access to these special episodes, simply back us on Patreon at any level. We will continue to release our standard episodes every fortnight as usual.
If you are already a backer, you will find a post in your Patreon feed with a download link. The episode will also appear in our special Patreon RSS feed.
Things we mention in this episode include:
Listening to Scott describing Laird Barons novels reminds me of Dennis Lehane. Have you read any Lehane Scott?

While I had very much enjoyed the few Old Leech short stories I'd first read, I had a similar reaction to you when I read The Croning when it came out, Steve. I was looking forward to it, but some of the dialog and characterization was grating and off-putting. It felt anachronistic, like the men in it had stepped out of noir B-movies and wandered around in the modern day.
Maybe I'd enjoy it in the crime novels more, especially since I'd be prepared for it and find it less out of place.

I find that wish some of Scorsese films, there's a humourless machismo to them. - Paul

I was just starting at university the fall Angel Heart came out...Quite a few guys I knew had liked the movie for Lisa Bonet only...I could not even learn what the movie was about from any of them. Probably not what the creators were hoping for...

Listening to Scott talk about his love of tough, pugnacious hard-boiled noir sounds like the types of characters he seems to enjoy playing in games. Always seemed a contrast to his bleak scenario design. :)

Laird Barron is like being punched in the face. He writes well, I like the subject matter, but it's just too macho for me. I'd rather read Derek Raymond for grit.

I've always felt 18 just lacks the mystique of X.

Angel Heart was an 18. X certs in the UK stopped in 1982 (https://www.bbfc.co.uk/education-resources/student-guide/bbfc-history/history-age-ratings-symbols), 5 years before the film appeared.
