How commissions work (FAQ)
Added 2017-06-08 02:03:19 +0000 UTCI'm putting this up here just because I feel like there should be a good explanation on the site of what my commissions are all about. I will be linking to this on the rewards bar.
What do you get for a commission pledge?
For a commission I can do a short, non-interactive scene with 1-2 pictures (possibly with some variation versions, like a 'messy' version and a 'clean' one). While the scene generally has to be non-interactive or it's too much work, it can certainly be a part of an already existing interactive sex scene, like an additional option added on top of what's already there.
You might want me to add a blowjob scene to an existing interactive sex scene, (they already have those, of course, but this is just an example) and that would be the right kind of length and complexity. The scene also could also be outside one of the existing sex scenes, such as a character waking another character up with a morning blowjob (for example). Feel free to get creative! One patron commissioned a kinky Kimiko dream sequence, then a different patron commissioned an expansion to it, which worked out well. Another patron commissioned the possibility for maids dresses to dissolve from a slime's acid in combat, which was an idea I'd wanted to do but had cut from the project for time reasons. Or maybe you'd like to commission a new cheat? Use your imagination! Just remember I need to control my work load.
There are a number of commissioned scenes in the Pervert Action: Legacy victory suite and some of those are a bit longer than what I've described, but in those cases the patron pledged over multiple months to allow extra time to expand the scenes. That is an option, but I still can't go crazy-huge with any commission or it will take over the game.
Voice acting may or may not be possible; it depends on a lot of things. What stage of development is the game in? Has the voice acting already been finalized? Is the actress available for more lines? Is the scene something they won't mind doing? I'll try to be upfront about this at the start but if you don't care about having VA in it you can let me know that too.
What content can you commission?
A good rule if you're trying to work out if I would accept some kind of sexual kink is if you've seen it in my games before then I'm probably broadly fine with doing it again. I would find it hard to produce a (good) scene about something I wasn't into.
I'm open minded and I don't like kink-shaming, but I also didn't get into this job to make stuff that doesn't appeal to me. I'm not into gay, futa, vore, scat (etc.) or generally non-consensual scenes. I also should be clear, I don't want to get into any legal trouble! Anything that isn't really legal (you know what I'm talking about) is right out.
Some scenes I've done for commissions don't necessarily feel like 'canon' scenes to me because they are, according to my interpretation, not really true to the characters. In those cases I don't always mind doing them, but if they don't fit the characters (or story) then they will end up in the harem mode victory suite as bonus scenes, which is a good compromise, I think.
Why do you accept so few?
Commissions can be very time consuming, so I can't get too distracted by them or I won't have time for actual game development. Also, just for my own interest in the projects I need to be able to make what I want to make most of the time, or I might get bored with a game (which is bad, it can lead to writer's block, which is hard to manage). That's why I keep my number of commissions down to three slots at a time.
That said, it's not so hard if your request doesn't require me to make new content for you! So you can actually pledge more money than the reward tier you select - just pledge whatever you want and select the $10 tier. If you'd like to pledge high and see some of the in-progress game art or something like that then I can easily accommodate that and you'd be supporting the project a great deal in doing so. :) I also got a pledge once that was simply someone buying ongoing access to the game without wanting to pledge continuously. I figured that was a reasonable request as well.
Why $50?
I don't actually make very good money out of commissions as a rule. I know it might seem like a lot, but bear in mind I need to do hours and hours of work to complete any commission, so I don't get a very good pay rate for my time. First, consider that the first $10 already gets you all the other rewards, meaning it's only really a $40 commission plus other rewards. Second, Patreon and associated fees take up about 10% of the total, leaving $35. Often working on a commission also involves buying new 3D assets or (in the future) paying voice actors, so I don't get all the money. I could wind up with something like $20 for a hard day's work! (If you want to pledge more, or for a longer period of time I'll definitely take it!)
This means scenes generally have to be reasonably economical on my part. They have to be fairly short and easy for me to make, preferably taking advantage of assets I already have. Sometimes I have done a longer one because the patron has pledged for multiple months for the same commission.
But if I make so little off them why do I accept them at all? Basically, I figure as long as I'm accepting commissions that other players might want to see in the game it's okay because the work isn't wasted. It goes to expanding the game content.
Also, there's one more reason to accept them: I enjoy sometimes getting suggestions from particularly enthusiastic supporters. It can fuel the imagination to get outside input and interest. These suggestions needn't necessarily come in the form of commissions, (I've picked up players' suggestions without them before) but the extra money really helps me dedicate some time to it.
So I just wanted to say all this in order to make clear the economics of it on my end. In many ways the job would be easiest if I just had thousands and thousands of $1 patrons because fifty $1 patrons require less work than one $50 commission, but that's obviously not how all this works. :) I really, really appreciate patrons doing commissions and the support of this small number of people has been extremely important to my ability to turn this into a job.

I've been very happy to have your support, thank you again!

2017-06-09 03:45:34 +0000 UTCSo far i am very happy and extremly satisifed with my commissions. Not only does Ben know how to probably create something out of your vision (easier with good references) put he is putting way more work into them as he is describing in this post. Remember the Iku dream sequence in the victory suite? I commissioned it and he made more pics and text than i asked for. Thats why it is so long. I put way too much money into this great guy but every cent was worth it. So dont hesitate to commission something when a spot is open (mine never though :D).
