the chinese gov hate religion bc of the communist regime. they can't have the people worshiping religion bc the state is supposed to have the largest influence on the people. communism requires the population to be subservient and have no sovereignty which freedom of religion prevents.

Religion is dying, but not the belief system. People are drifting away from deities that they worship to more of a spiritual route where they are at the center and the things they believe in are more like guides. That's why in recent years there is a rise in spirituality and astrology. Especially amoung the youth. There is also a portion of youth converting to Buddhism which again is more spiritual and self-driven in nature, but that's a whole other conversation.
