Over $2,000 Raised for Krus and Legends By Patrons So Far

The Patreon Muay Thai Library is a very special thing. Not only have we documented nearly 100 hours of the Muay Thai that is unique to Thailand, but the long-form instruction format allows viewers to really see these Legends, these incredible Krus, who they are and how they are. It has changed lives and allowed people who may never have met these Legends to feel like they know them, as well as inspiring those who can make the journey out to Thailand to come and train with some of them. Now many of them are "destination" privates when people come to Thailand, when before few even might know if these men are still teaching. Some have been able to thrive, some have been able to move out from under situations in which they were stuck, some have gained more freedom and respect. The Library is changing things in Thailand, especially for many of the wonderful men of that Golden Age generation and beyond. But the Legends and Krus of the Library live connected to the fabric of Muay Thai that is in Thailand, and almost all of that fabric has been suspended by the circumstances of gyms being closed and events being cancelled.

All over the world people are facing tragedy, and (thankfully) this is not that. This is not tragedy. Everyone I am in contact with is healthy, and is surrounded by the circle of friends who they rely on for social support.  But there is serious concern about just basic financial burdens. Many of these krus and legends do not live with savings. They live month to month, sometimes week to week. And with all gyms and events closed their regular means of living is completely cut off. In the case of Dieselnoi, he was suffering pretty intensely under the complications of his Psoriasis and had no means to seek treatment for it.

So far we've raised more than $2,000 USD, contributed by my patrons and distributed it directly to Krus and Legends in the Library. I made a call on my Instagram a while back and generous people just came forward, wanting and able to offer some support from the global community of Muay Thai. The basic idea is that if someone in the Library touched you with their knowledge or their person, if you've benefited from them, and you find yourself in a stable place, consider an extra donation of a "thank you" and "take care." Because the Library is able to reach across the world, and connect small bits of special, local knowledge to everyone out there, it's cool when that connection bounces back to these Legends, who are truly touched and moved by the acknowledgment and support. Dieselnoi was able to go see a doctor about his Psoriosis and receive treatment (he sent me a video, the itching must have been incredible). Yodkhunpon had to leave Pattaya due to lack of work and return to Roi Et (where he's from) and was in a very bad way, financially. The support he's received is helping him and his family now.  Rambaa has a few of his young fingers living with him, under his care, and his gym is closed; the donations to him allow him to continue taking care of his students when there is no financial possibility through his business.

Already, this year 10% of the net of all pledges is going to the Krus and Legends here, so if you are a patron you are already contributing to the Kru Fund supporting these men. And if you have bought a pair of my shorts or shirts at my store, the net profit of those sales also go to the Kru Fund in support and thank you, and have done so for years. So, this is just a call to the opportunity just direct a special thank you, if you find yourself in a good place.

The thank yous keep coming on Instagram so make it more manageable I set up a campaign. When you make a donation please send me a note (either in email at svondoom@gmail.com, or in private message here on Patreon) to tell me who your donation is to go to. So far the Krus have been blown away. It isn't just the money, it's the feeling that people are looking out for them from around the world.

These are the krus who have received the extra thank yous from someone so far:

Almost all of these transfers have been by bank, but because Rambaa is close to me I drove over and presented one in person, and included a donation of used equipment they might appreciate when the gym opens up again to everyone:

Other Ways to Support through Purchase of Cool Stuff

If you are looking for other ways to support the Krus in the Library, the "Sylvie Intensive" series with Karuhat is a completely different collection that really dives down into detail in the fighting style of Karuhat. There are over 30 hours of instruction + more than 6 hours of the Elbow Hunter Yodkhupon. If you enjoy the Library and really want to study down, the net profit of the sales of this Intensive series goes 100% to Karuhat and Yodkhupon. These are On Demand videos you can purchase for download, or stream unlimitedly by subscription. This Vimeo, and the entire collection was made possible through patron support. Paying full price just gives more to these legends, but patrons do get discounts to this material too, you can find the promocodes here.

Now 100% of the profit from the sale of prints of Kevin's photographs of legends go to the krus photographed: check out the photography here

Wondering, what was your process of learning Thai like? How long did it take? Can you speak it as well? Seems like your understanding of it is quite good. Thanks! WB
