Reacting to Mary & George Season 1 - Episode 1

Comments

Happy to finally get a chance to watch your reactions to this show. We're still a week from the finale in the US but I can get through most of your videos in the meantime!

Rowan Cannell

Love this show so much. Wanted to see your reaction!

Okay, I started this and got to about 10 minutes from the end then I fell asleep, woke up and tried again with the same result. However, I have now finished it and at first I was like, hmm, this isn’t really my cup of tea, but that last bit under the tree with Julianne and Nicholas changed my mind and I’m now actually looking forward to seeing what happens next. Another great show that I had never even heard of Jackie so thanks for that xx

As soon as I saw who was in this, I knew it would be interesting. Julianne Moore is always a class act, whatever she’s in and so far, I am also enjoying the combination of bluntness and the rather arch tone. A dangerous time to be alive, especially as a woman and she clearly has nerves of steel as well as the cunning intelligence to carry out her plan for George. Money, property, privilege…and knowing how to acquire them and manipulate others to your advantage….a desperate business, literally, but also a thrilling one if you are good at it, I guess. But I hope that there will be some exploration of the victims and fallout, too, as the action progresses.

Now that I finished the episode, I am also intrigued as to where it will go from here… Thank you Jackie for bringing us another amazing show…

I have a few random thoughts after watching this reaction. First, it seems that The Last Five Years is a musical that people either really like or really don’t like. Although I don’t relate to it, I do think it’s really good. Second, I’ve never had the chance to see Simon Russell Beale on stage, but I did really like his Falstaff in The Hollow Crown. Third, I think there needs to be some kind of a warning for any show that involves puking. Fourth, I can confirm what others have said that the recorder is pretty common in American music classes, particularly in elementary school - or at least it was when I was growing up. And I guess fifth, Julianne Moore is such an incredible actress. She has been phenomenal in basically every movie I’ve ever seen her do. I don’t think this series will be available in the US until April, so it’s nice to get an early look at it.

Once again, Jackie, thank you for showing your reactions full-screen. This is the second time I've seen this episode and the first time (with another reactor) the image was tiny. As with Young Royals, this is so much more enjoyable.

I didn’t love rwrb either but I love nick in this!

Same!

Darcy Bandaru

Yep, 3rd grade everyone had to learn the recorder, I had to pause at this part to comment…

Erin

What a treat to watch this with you! Thank you Jackie.

haha recorder is something all kids play in the US as well as far as im aware

veri✨

I didn’t have a recorder growing up in the 50s/60s but my two younger sisters did.

Diane Furlong

I feel all US kids in my area also tortured their parents with the beautiful sounds of Hot Cross Buns on the recorder as well. 🤣

I woke up way too early once again but 3:15 AM seems like a good time to hang out with you, Jackie, to watch “Mary & George”. Loved your reaction Jackie! Thank You

It makes you think about King James and the bible, right? How different everything would maybe be if James hadn't pleased the church. I'm not religious so I think the bible is a bunch of hooey (and religion as a whole, but I respect everyone's right to believe in who they want to believe in and have friends with different religions and have attended church services with them). But, I suppose if James had put all his love for the boys in the bible, someone would come along and burn it or protest and whatnot. I guess we'll never know, but it's interesting to think about. It's also interesting how, back then, sex wasn't about attraction or love, but power and status.
