Reacting To Young Royals - Episode 4

Comments

Goodbye, Maria. I don’t think this community is for you 👋🏼

Jackie-Ross Lavender

I’m so furious with you!!! Wilhelm is NOW playing with Simon!!!.🤬 As a gay man you SHOULD BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT INSECURITY !! PLUS HE IS A FUCKING PRICE WHITH ANXIETY!!! 🤬🤬🤬

Maria Truedsson

I’m so furious with you!!B INSTEAD OF BEING UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT WILHELM IS GOING THROUGH YOU JUST BLAME A 15 YEAR OLD GL

Maria Truedsson

I’m so tired of you constantly blaming Wilhelm for playing with Simon!!! As a gay man you should understand what he’s going through!!! I’m furious with you B

Maria Truedsson

Yes and his parents don’t even give him time to grieve for his brother before suggesting he sits in on a meeting the next day to see ‘how things work’, poor kid. I hope season 2 sees him ‘tearing the house down’ but he will have to work very hard to regain Simon’s trust, whatever he does or tries to do. I just hope we don’t get all our hearts broken in the process. 🥺❤️

At the risk of laboring the point, the writing in this series is so tight. Lisa has said that everything in the script is there for a reason. In episode one, when the family sits down for Wilhelm's mea culpa speech, Wilhelm sits next to his father, probably their normal seating arrangement. and a staff member has to reverse them. Foretelling things to come, perhaps. And then, as Wilhelm stumbles to start his speech, the Queen nudges him with her elbow to settle and get started. This is beautifully balanced in episode four at the funeral. Wilhelm is standing, somewhat dazed, holding his mother's hand and, as the procession moves out, again the Queen has to push him to get moving and mouths, somewhat impatiently, "Go!" (or probably, Gå!). I haven't seen much comment about the fact that Wilhelm is the "spare" except by Wilhelm himself in his remembrance speech. As such, he has been of little importance. All emphasis has been on Erik who will be (or would have been) King. Probably the reason Wilhelm was allowed to choose the school he wanted to attend. When his mother breaks down at the dinner table talking about Erik having been groomed for the crown as she was and, "People will always compare you with Erik, in every step you take." I imagine Wilhelm feeling, "Sorry, Momma. that you have to settle for second choice." He says, "That's already the case. It always has been." Imagine all that privilege and reaching the age of 16 and knowing you are always "second choice", even now as Crown Prince.

There's a fun interview with Young Royals creator Lisa Ambjörn, Edvin, and Omar on YouTube that's worth checking out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rxovj6DqSzM

Lane Wright

Yeah, the boys and the show were robbed. Sigh…☹️

Graham & Ruth May

Hi, Dennis. That’s a very good point and one I hadn’t thought of, so thank you 🙏

Graham & Ruth May

As is typical of Lisa Ambjörn's (creator and head writer) writing, a lot of thought went into Wilhelm's instigating the love making. As Wilhelm is coming out of a night of drinking and drug taking, a question of consent comes up. Wilhelm has to take the lead.

Dennis Verner

I think Edvin gets Wilhelm’s physicality absolutely right too. In episode 1 and 2, most of the time his face is almost frozen and his jaw is clenched as he struggles to live up to his parents’ expectations and also stop himself from responding to Simon. In the final scenes of episode 4 in particular but also at Rosh’s football game, he looks like a different person and it’s interesting that he’s the one to initiate making love with Simon after Simon says ‘I like you too’, as though he realises that with him he can just let go and be himself- which is also why I still hold out hope for them in season 2. 🤞❤️

Graham & Ruth May

how did i miss this reaction coming out omg ?? gonna watch it first thing tomorrow. thank you for the reaction as always!

elisa

Yes, you’re right. He’s so used to feeling unloved, except for his relationship with his brother and he doesn’t even have that now. Makes my heart ache.

Graham & Ruth May

…same thing happens when Simon says I like you too. Wilhelm looks honestly surprised and almost confused.

annanas

@Graham&RuthMay This!

I was once working on a project with a man from the Netherlands, and he mentioned offhand that everybody, absolutely everybody in the Netherlands speaks English. This makes sense, as England is right there across the Channel. Sweden is not as close, of course, but I would expect speaking English is common there too. Especially among those we're seeing here, the cream of Swedish society, the kind who get expensive educations. And not just English, but other languages too. So we see characters who jump from language to language and hardly seem to notice. They're used to it.

Aggghhhh! I can’t stop commenting on this episode, but keep seeing new things! One thing which particularly strikes me and runs through all the episodes is how starved of love and affection Wilhelm is. Who else would hug their headmistress as if their life depended on it? Says an awful lot about his lack of a relationship with his mother. She’s absolutely glacial. When Simon rescues him on the football field, he keeps repeating’You came!’ as if he can’t believe that someone would care enough to actually turn up when he needed help. You can see this in his developing relationship with Simon, when he’s with him and when he thinks about him, he’s all about physical touch. I think that’s why the final scenes in this episode are so important because you can see how desperately Wilhelm needs to express love as well as receive it and Edvin is utterly brilliant at showing this and much more. Hats off to the writers too, for their understanding that sometimes less is more and paring down the script letting silence and physical expression speak too. I thought Heartstopper had a hold on me and it did-and does- but OMG, this is such a layered series.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-FRLZZgLYw Kit and Joe and Heartstopper didn’t win at The National Television Awards but they did get this! In case you haven’t seen it already. 🥰

I’m actually doing a rewatch now to get the awful taste of the NTAs out of my mouth. Very comforting, but this show fills me with so much joy (still) that I’m not sure how soothing it is. Lol. We shall see… hope you are having a restful night. 🙏

The Homesick Brit

Not that I know off! It was nice to speak to you today Jackie even if I didn’t tell you who I was!!!

Audrey Gunn

Is there a Harry Hate Club yet??

Graham & Ruth May

I’ve been crazy-busy, so I’m so behind on your videos, but I just binged through all your Young Royals reactions and it made me so happy! This show has so many hidden layers, it’s like uncovering new mysteries every time I watch. A few things that I haven’t noticed mentioned in some of the other comments yet: —Education in Sweden is free through age 16. Based on my limited knowledge and reading, Simon and Sara are able to attend Hillerska because, while it’s an independent school, fees are usually subsidized by the government. However, if they wanted to board there, then they would have to pay out of pocket. It’s really where you see the class divide stand out, since obviously the richest kids have no problem paying the tuition, while kids like Simon and Sara are the equivalent of “scholarship kids.” This is why it’s such a big deal for Simon and his mom when she finds the invoice from the school for the tutoring; other than general expenses, she’s not paying a ton of money to the school (because it wouldn’t be affordable), so this kind of expense is quite a shock. If anyone knows more about this, please correct me if I’ve made any errors about this info. —Despite this taking place in modern-day Sweden, it differs slightly from the reality there. Sweden is actually a very LGBTQ-friendly country, and the Swedish royal family has confirmed there is no issue with a member of the royal family being LGBTQ+ and being allowed to rule. While I’m sure there is still homophobia in some places (nowhere is perfect), the real Sweden isn’t quite as conservative as it is portrayed in the show. That being said, I do believe that the classism is very much accurate - as it would be in most countries - and I think it’s just as important to the story as the homophobia. Both issues clearly place Simon as “other” compared to Willhelm, and as someone who is not “appropriate” for him to be with, in the eyes of people like the Queen and August. And, on a personal note, I am a proud member of the August Hate Club. We often share meeting spaces with the Ben Hope Hate Club. Both are self-loathing narcissists who step on everyone who dares to get in the way of their idealized self-image. They both take out their anxieties and insecurities on the one person they know they can hurt the most; with Ben, there’s a romantic angle because he is into Charlie, whether he wants to admit it or not; with August, it’s a social jealousy issue: he hates that Willhelm has what he so desperately desires and struggles to achieve (the money, the social clout, the attention of the girl he likes, etc).

Charlie

Yes, that scene was improvised and it was amazing! Some really spectacular acting by Edvin, you can really feel his despair and desperation. He’s truly talented, especially for his young age. I love listening to the cast speak in English (and Spanish as well for Omar). I watched several interviews with them, but out of sheer curiosity I also watched a few episodes with the English dubbed since I knew they did it themselves. It was fascinating.

Charlie

Me too. I sleep very poorly and often have to resort to some soothing Heartstopper content.

Graham & Ruth May

And having said all that, I would add that you are definitely not going to be ok after watching episodes 5 and 6, but you’ll see why I have commented as I have at the end of the season. Also can’t wait to see your reaction to the first 4 minutes teaser for season 2. No spoilers but look out for the goosebumps, on screen and I’m guessing, on you too! 🙃😏

Graham & Ruth May

I am absolutely up for joining the August hate club. There is something extremely twisted going on there and body dysmorphia is suggested by his pinching of his non-existent fat rolls in the gym. It seems to me that he hates himself but projects all his self loathing onto Wilhelm. I agree that Simon is very vulnerable to being hurt repeatedly by Wilhelm but I think that pointers are being set up for season 2. When, eventually Wilhelm realises that Simon really loves him and sees him as a person, not as the Crown Prince, unlike just about everyone else, particularly his family, he won’t make that mistake again of putting duty before love. (Even in the traumatic situation of his brother being killed, what love do his parents show him? No hugs, no physical warmth at all.) The song ‘Revolution’ which I think was playing in the football field scene strongly suggests that to me and hopefully Wilhelm will be gunning for all of them and for the status quo in season 2. 🤞🤞🤞 Lastly, yes it was racier than you were expecting, Jackie, but how beautifully those scenes between Simon and Wilhelm were shot. Amazing talent and off the scale chemistry, too. 😍🥰🥹

Graham & Ruth May

I don’t know if you’ve seen this mentioned, but I understand that Edvin improvised the whole scene where he’s alone on the soccer field, and I find that pretty impressive. Yes, August just gets more and more despicable, and I have to give props to Malte, who plays him so well (and isn’t really as tall as he appears to be, from what I can tell). You mentioned how interesting it is to hear them speak English: if you see any interviews with Edvin where he is speaking English, you’ll see that he is very fluent and almost sounds American, which I understand is what a Swedish accent speaking English sounds like. Omar is pretty fluent as well, and you can definitely hear the Venezuelan in his accent when speaking English.

Lane Wright

I feel like August started out annoying, entitled and over eager but is just getting worse and worse and Felice is doing the opposite. Every time I see her I like her more

Rosie Dickinson

Ok, I managed to watch it and can I be the first member to join you in the August hate club please????? The guy is an absolute piece of shit and this is just the beginning if it 😡 I have to go pac and check out but I shall reply more another time.

Audrey Gunn

Hotel wifi is shit, might have to wait til tmrw 🙁

Audrey Gunn

The joys of insomnia. Something to occupy my sleepless hell. Lol. Thank you, sir. 🙏❤️
