Reacting To "This Winter" (A Heartstopper Novella by Alice Oseman)

I really really enjoyed this novella and your reaction. I actually found it very therapeutic in a strange way. I also grew up in a home that gave me severe anxiety and was told that I was “too sensitive” when trying to talk to either of my divorced parents about anything on my mind. Holidays were also a nightmare. I feel for anyone who had similar experiences growing up, but it’s also nice to know sometimes that we aren’t alone in our trauma. I don’t have a loving partner yet to spend holidays with, but I have hope, and I’m so glad that you do, Jackie! By the way, I like to volunteer to help others or gift myself a day of my favorite things when I’m alone on Christmas. Being solo can be a blessing too, depending on how you look at. Best wishes :)

In regard to Oliver, I have heard Alice say that due to all the regulations about kids on set it would be more trouble than it would be worth story wise. Which on one hand, I understand, but I think Oliver adds a depth to Charlie’s character that is missed without him( this is true for Nick, too. Their relationship is so sweet!). Seeing Charlie’s gentleness and silliness with Oliver is very sweet. He seems like he’s a good older brother. Also, where did David come from?? How is this man Sarah Nelson’s kid? I’d love a bit more backstory into that family dynamic.

I enjoyed both this novella and your video 😊 I agree with the above comments. This novella made me love Nick and Tori even more. Nick is such a good boyfriend for Charlie and this novella does a better job than the comics of making him a real person (don’t get me wrong, I ADORE Heartstopper). And I feel like Tori has real believable sibling energy. I’m so glad Charlie has such good people to help him through the hard times.

One of the things I don’t like about Patreon is that if you accidentally jostle your iPad, you can write most of a comment and then accidentally erase it. That just happened to me, so I’m going to try this again: I believe I have mentioned that when I was trying to download the e-book of “This Winter,” I accidentally ended up with the audio book instead. So I really listened to it rather than read it. I will say the e-book is very nicely done, and the reader captures the three different characters skillfully with her voice. My experience of Christmas growing up was different from yours, in that it was pretty magical through my childhood and didn’t become problematic until I was an adult, so that now I love the Christmas season more than I do the day itself. Since I didn’t come out until I was well into adulthood, I didn’t have the kind of grilling that Charlie got from family members, but I can certainly understand how awkward and uncomfortable it must’ve been for him. The thing about the book I most love is what a wonderful boyfriend Nick is to Charlie in this novella. As you said, he hits that middle ground so well, treating Charlie as he is and not as a delicate flower or a crazy person. He sees Charlie as Charlie, not as a problem, and that is the kind of relationship that Charlie needs in his life. I do also adore how clearly we see Tori‘s love for her brother and how much she cares for his well-being. I do think this book sets us up nicely for her narration in “Solitaire.” I have to say this video didn’t feel like it was about 36 minutes; the time spent watching it flew by.

This was just lovely. As someone who understands difficult family dynamics resulting from shall we say “challenging” life circumstances, I had many of the same visceral reactions to this part of the Heartstopper story. I appreciate that Alice takes the opportunity to show that even in the worst throes of his mental health struggles, Charlie has a staunch support system in Nick, Tori, his father, Mrs. Nelson, his friend group and teachers, and even in Oliver. Once again, she uses her storytelling to model honest communication and healthy behaviours during times of personal strife. Truly brilliant and so important for modern audiences of all ages and social roles. Looking forward to your video discussing “Nick and Charlie.” That one gutted me perhaps even more than this one did. Hope you had a lovely visit to Bournemouth, and that you have a wonderful week. Being old enough to actually be your mum, I’ll always be here with a kind, supportive, ACCEPTING word. Be safe. Be well. If our paths cross while I’m in London next year, expect a massive hug. X
