LAST YEAR'S GRAPPLE DAY
I took some photo portraits of competitors that morning before the tournament started. Out of all the first-time competitors, it was Kali Chand who caught my attention.
Kali is a junior, majoring in international relations, with a minor in killing time until her trust fund kicks in. Like most competitors, she's confident. The difference is, when Kali says she's going to win the whole thing, I almost believe her.
Almost. After all, last year's champion, Sam Foster, will be in the mix again, and by all accounts, she's only gotten stronger. What will happen when Kali's unshakable confidence meets Sam's unstoppable athleticism? Whatever happens, I'm bringing my camera.
