FAQs

What's the difference between the regular and supporter versions?

Netplay is the same for everyone; I want everyone to be able to play with anyone!
The supporters version has additional compatibility with PS2, DC, GC, and PSP (these consoles don't have Netplay).

Does this include ROMs?

No, you must add the URL of a supported server so the app can work as a download manager and get the games on demand. Check the readme for details.

How does Netplay work?

CloudBox uses the excellent and robust Netplay feature from Retroarch. I've built upon that to create a system that lets users just select a game and play, skipping the burden of setting everything up on both sides! The download includes a tutorial in both English and Spanish.

Can I play alone?

Yes, absolutely. Just select "Play Game" instead of "Play Game + Netplay."

Do I need to configure anything on my router?

To connect as Player 2, you don't have to do anything, just open the lobby and connect. It just works! To host games, the best experience is achieved when you have UPnP activated on your router (most have it on by default) and your ISP doesn't use CGNAT.

How can I know if I'm behind a CGNAT?

Try to host a game. If an error appears saying:
"External network has a private or shared address. Consider using a relay server."
You are most likely behind a CGNAT.

I'm behind a CGNAT; can I host games?

Yes, the app includes an option to use Relay Servers. Just select the one that's close to you. The ping will be higher, but the experience is still really good (I've tried playing with people on the same continent, and it works fine).

Does this have private lobbies?

No, not yet. I may add a password feature in a future update so players can create private parties.

How would I know what region is the person I'm connecting to?

Retroarch shows the ping when you connect to someone, I may also add more details in the lobby browser in a future update, consider this a beta for now!

Can I install this on my arcade?

Absolutely, you can! Just be aware that the Arcade playlist currently only has multiplayer games, so you may want to use it as an alternative frontend. Make sure your controller boards are using the XInput protocol. I may also prepare a special version for arcades later with better support for 4:3 aspect ratios, configurable buttons for the main interface, and a full 1-player + multiplayer playlist.

I have a lot of HDD/SDD space, can I have a local collection?

I'm thinking about creating some kind of integration with MyRD.
