Update regarding taxes and bonus content
Added 2020-06-14 19:20:29 +0000 UTCHi everyone,
I hope you're doing well. This year has wrecked my routine and some of my goals. I feel bad for not delivering more bonus content to you. You've certainly helped me, and I want to help you through this crazy time. I'm starting to get ahead now and you should expect a bonus episode in the next few weeks. I've also been coming up with new ideas to get more bonus episodes out. And with your help, I've started working with more writers, researchers, sound designers, and producers to help get more content out so hopefully things fall into place soon and you should see more regular bonus episodes. Once again sorry for not delivering on that like I hoped.
Patreon is making some tax changes which will effect some of you. Due to new laws passing in several countries and US states, Patreon will be required to start charging sales tax on some pledges starting July 1st.
Less than half of all patrons will be charged sales tax, and for most, the amount will be very small. For example, sales tax rates in the US range from 4% to 11%, so on a $5 pledge, that would be between 20 cents and 55 cents.
Whether or not you will be charged sales tax depends on your location, and what is considered taxable there. Not every pledge is taxable, not all benefits are taxable in every location, and sometimes only a fraction of a pledge will be taxable. The money that Patreon collects as a result of these laws are paid directly to local governments.
I’m working closely with Patreon to ensure I’m able to save you as much money as possible when it comes to sales tax - which is not something that’s possible with other platforms.
If you’re in a location where sales tax will be required, you should expect to receive an email from Patreon with more information about this very soon, but I wanted to make sure you were aware of these changes way ahead of July 1st when they go into effect.
If you have questions, you should be able to find answers here. If you still have questions, the best place to get an answer is from Patreon’s customer support team, here.
Thank you for all of your support. Stay safe.

Enjoy your time between episodes! I will patiently wait for the next amazing story. Thank you for making this year so much easier to get through! —a Fan

2021-10-01 02:22:39 +0000 UTCMay a lil late, cauz you was the one to sign up finally @ patreon in a country which takes 20% Tax, but for me you should be supported to deliver this quality with your show those times!

2021-08-16 20:53:46 +0000 UTCI consider my subscription a security training and thus expense it on my company, and taxes are reclaimed. It would be great to have CPE’s for every podcast

2021-08-06 00:02:07 +0000 UTCI just paid because I live for the podcast and you deserve to make money off of it . Production value is amazing. The bonus episodes are just that, a bonus.

2021-07-08 01:59:36 +0000 UTCNo worries bro. I’ve only logged in a few times during the pandemic for extra content. I started supporting primarily for the excellent public episodes. Keep up the good work.

2021-04-21 21:59:37 +0000 UTCTo be honest I rarely log in to check anything just glad you been so regular every two weeks and the more companies need to give hole episodes I love all modern EDR s and it would be cool to hear more from them since I really see them as the spear

2020-08-25 21:46:55 +0000 UTCBonus episode are a bonus, but not necessary. Your regular content is extraordinary. The level of cyber security experts who are willing to share their stories with you is phenomenal. I look forward to each episode. And your presentation skills are excellent - your voice quality is so good I wonder if you worked with a voice coach. Keep up the enjoyable and informative content!

2020-07-21 14:33:11 +0000 UTCYo Jack, meant to comment awhile ago I’m an old dude who told my kids to get off the computer a time or two, now I’m working to keep up! Your quality content is A. Informative, B. Interesting as hell, & C. Heck of a lot of fun. It’s also heartening to hear someone who knows how to communicate effectively. A few pennies won’t hurt my pocket but thanks for the head up! Cheers old boy!!

2020-07-12 23:18:52 +0000 UTCYep! What M. Dodge Mumford said...

2020-07-08 11:12:49 +0000 UTCI am all for open and available content and I do not mind paying for the effort put into creating prime content. You Jack deliver, please keep up the good work and I promise I will keep supporting - I am not here for the bonus, I am here for the diaries.

2020-06-30 19:13:03 +0000 UTCI'm not giving you money for the bonus content, I'm giving you money because your regular content is worth paying for. And if I have to pay an extra few % sales tax to support your continued creation of your podcast, that's fine by me. Zero impact.

2020-06-28 15:49:58 +0000 UTCAwesome podcast. I laugh, I cry, I learn. The end of "The Big House" was particularly touching. Thanks for the tax warning.
August Tischer
2020-06-19 02:29:00 +0000 UTCDon't worry about bonus content. I support you here because I like your regular podcasts, no need to lock up good episodes behind a paywall.
Bjarke Freund-Hansen
2020-06-18 08:48:43 +0000 UTCYes it's true. EU has been paying taxes already.
Jack Rhysider
2020-06-16 18:32:23 +0000 UTCAs long your quality on the pod is high I don't care, and I can listen to an episode many times if it's good
Roar Jørstad
2020-06-15 17:05:24 +0000 UTCI normally listen while commuting so I have way too many episodes to listen to.
Eric Darchis
2020-06-15 13:14:52 +0000 UTCI think it's safe to say most of our routines and goals have been wrecked over the last few months. :-) Do what you can, everyone's coming up a bit short these days, I think most of us will understand. (And speaking just for myself, my podcast subs are kind of out of control anyway and I wouldn't notice a slowdown regardless. :-) ) Too bad about South Dakota v. Wayfair and all the tax situation. So it goes. A quarter or so a month probably won't break too many patrons' bank accounts, at least.

2020-06-15 03:54:02 +0000 UTCAll good brother, thanks for sharing :) Super keen for your next episode.

2020-06-15 03:03:30 +0000 UTCI really enjoy your podcast and I've learned so much from it. Keep up the good work.

2020-06-15 02:35:01 +0000 UTCShut up and take my money! I would seriously pay 10x as much as this for your content, it is hands down the best podcast available for this material. I look forward to it every fortnight. I'll keep paying even without the adfree or the bonus content.
Roland Harrison
2020-06-14 23:25:15 +0000 UTCShut up and take my money! Seriously thou, relax and just stay safe, you and your whole family. Please just be sure that you and dad stay of the adventure times until 2020 is over ok. Stay cool hackermen!
Dennis Persson
2020-06-14 19:56:13 +0000 UTCThe Ad free feed is good enough for me! Do whatever is best for your workload :)

2020-06-14 19:55:22 +0000 UTCWelcome to the club. In the UK I've always said 20% tax on any pledges... Seriously though, take your time. I'd rather fewer decent episodes than you rush it.
Keith Barnett
2020-06-14 19:29:54 +0000 UTCThank you for the update! As others mentioned looking forward to more great content!
Lawrence
2020-06-14 19:25:56 +0000 UTCYour episodes are always so solid. If there's a gap in bonus content, I certainly won't go complaining. When stuff comes out it comes out and it's always awesome.

2020-06-14 19:25:50 +0000 UTCNo worries. I don’t think anyone’s plans turned out the way they thought this year anyways. Glad you’re getting on top of things. Stay safe!

2020-06-14 19:22:58 +0000 UTCNo worries man. This year is a shit-show throughout for everyone. If 2020 was a straight line, IKEA furniture could never be built.
