Strangers on Paper - DevLog #23

Hey everyone! You may (or may not) have noticed we’ve decided to pause our Patreon pledges for the time being. The issues we’ve been having with the hardware have taken progress from slowly moving on to hardly getting anything done, and so, after some back and forth, we both agreed it’d be for the best not to charge our patrons for the time being.

This does not mean we are stopping progress altogether, it just means that, while we greatly appreciate your support, (and because we do) we’d rather wait until we have reached the goals we are behind on before resuming the pledges.

As I mentioned on the previous log, I've been working on the code in Ren'Py. Unfortunately, it's not like riding a bike (which I don't actually know how to do either🤓), but they say that once you learn, you never forget. I'm the opposite when it comes to coding. Starting from Chapter 2, some of the decisions we made in Chapter 1 carry more weight and make more sense, which I love. There are still some things I can't quite understand in terms of how coding works, but the positive thing is that the structure is already in place for when the renders come.

We also wanted to wait a little before making this announcement so we could share some good news with y’all. From the moment we started working on SOP, we both had a very clear vision of things we wanted for it, and one of those was to collaborate with people who could add a little more magic into our project. Of course, our budget is quite limited at the moment, so we’ve been on the lookout for upcoming artists so we could help each other out. And so we came across Alex, an artist with a very distinct style that grabbed us instantly , and we’ve commissioned a poster for SOP. We can’t wait to show you what she’s working on so… here goes a sneak peek:

Keep in mind this is just a first sketch and the final product will be quite different, but a little excitement never hurt anyone. Here’s her site if you’d like to check out her work.

That's it for now and, if you'd still like to support us, let us remind you that you can wishlist SOP on Steam if you haven't, and tell your friends, cousins, weird uncles and generous grannies about it so they can wishlist it too.

You can also donate whatever amount you wish to on Itch as always, every cent counts.

We fucking love you.

It's never easy to share this kind of news for us either, but this is where we're at right now - and only right now. Can't wait to have great things to report. Thank you so much for your faith in us and support, Callisto.

Hi guys, thanks for the update. Sorry to hear about the hardware issues, but maybe you can turn this into crisistu... NO! I'm not gonna say that, it sounds dumb. :D I hope you can figure it out soon. Looking forward to see what the new artist comes up with, her style looks interesting. :) Cheers!

To be honest, I don't like it one bit that the number of developers whose work has touched me and who pause their Patreon continues to grow. For whatever reason, I feel better in those cases where developers just went radio silent for half a year. Anyway, no matter the feeling you get when you read news like this, I still have no doubt that you will succeed in creating something great. After all, setbacks, obstacles and delays are something that can surprise only the naïve. You will not be stopped. Browsing Alex's portfolio took much longer than expected, which I guess is just another way of pointing out that I really like the style and images. I think it's a good match. And yes, coding seems different, I know a bunch of people who would agree that it's the opposite of riding bike. They all forget much after pausing for some time. I dunno, maybe it's more like muscles when they don't get used. I will be overly excited for the next dev log, whenever that may be. Cheers to all of you.
