Happy Werewolf Wednesday!
Chapter 3: Intrusion
There was a very good reason why Hunter and Maleva had both been set on moon watch…
There was always a chance that outsiders ventured into these parts of the woods, representing a menace to their town.
“Careful…” Hunter told his loved one as he crawled around in the grass, trying to see who it was that they heard marching through the forest.
They both spied behind bushes, and it soon became obvious that armed forces had been dispatched throughout the woods. To what end, it was too soon to say, but enemies were around, and chances were they were in because they were searching for Cherrywood—their home.
Hunter smelled unfamiliar scents coming with the wind. He smelled oil and sweat, as well. He heard and felt an arrhythmic pounding of boots on the ground. If he was right, Maleva would catch these various sensations first. He witnessed her body coiling her up to utilize her home advantage—using the forest as cover and the environs to ambush the intruders and crush them in one fell swoop.
The enemies in question wore huge and heavy sets of armour.
They were soldiers.
Five of them, at least, based on what Hunter could see.
“What are you talking about? You should be the one to be careful. I’m stronger than you, Hunter, and I know I can take them all down alone. You just sit here and watch…” She told him.
“Wait! We don’t even know what they want!”
“I don’t care, they’re trespassing.”
To her, it was as simple as that. There was nothing else that mattered in the end.
Before Hunter could even stand, Maleva took off quietly. Her tenacity was admirable, but this was hasty. Still, she was right. Maleva was bigger and stronger than him, especially if she transformed.
Crouching down, he watched from behind another tree as Maleva stalked her prey. Watching her work was always a treat, not just because her ample curves shook and bounced with each movement. When Maleva felt threatened, she fought like a momma bear protecting her cubs.
Besides, talk could wait. People were intruding upon their territory and they had to take action.
With Maleva moving forward with her idea of attacking the soldiers first and she didn’t even bother to talk to him about it beforehand, Hunter had no other choice but to go along with her.
When Maleva sneaked around, becoming a shadow that jumped from tree to tree, and Hunter tagged along with her, they were able to hear the soldiers speaking among each other for the first time…
Hunter and Maleva were both listening carefully…
“Brothers, I cannot begin to tell you how glad I am that we were asked to go on this mission for the prince…” one of the five soldiers said to his “brothers” as he called them.
“You’re right, brother. Can you believe we are paid to do this?” Another soldier replied to him.
“That is exactly what I was thinking, brother—we’re paid to do this. We’re financed to destroy an innocent village, leaving it behind with nothing!” A third soldier shouted, instantly proving Maleva’s point that these guys were up to no good.
The man was seething. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. These soldiers not only were on a mission from the prince, but at the same time, they knew the unspeakable acts they were committing.
Meanwhile, the last two soldiers began to laugh, and it spread to the first three, their maniacal laughter sounding through the forest. Shame they couldn’t have heard Maleva drop from the trees, slipping her daggers as far as they could go into the necks of the two soldiers in the back.
Hunter fully believed in Maleva and he had a good feeling about what might follow next…
He could tell that she was more fuelled with rage than she had ever been in a long time…
“YAH!” Maleva suddenly surged out of the darkness and surprised the five soldiers!
She swung her pair of sharp daggers out of them and she took pleasure in riding their land from their evil presence!
When Maleva charged out, he knew he had to join her as well. Nothing would stand between these men and their homes until he could no longer stand himself. Charging out beside Maleva, he brandished his blade, ready to strike as well.
“You’re never going to take our homes!” he called out next to her. His teeth bared and growled, almost like an animal and less like a person.
He understood pretty early on that he did a good thing to join her right at the beginning of the battle because, even though Maleva was one skilled fighter, and now because of how brave she fought the soldiers, she had reduced this threat into something a lot less dangerous. Now, she was still at a numerical disadvantage, but she was off to a great start…
As soon as he stepped in, he noticed one of the soldiers had been able to sneak behind her back to attempt to strike her while she was busy with the other four.
Not so fast! Hunter thought as he flashed from one side of the forest to the next, pulling his wolf blade and slashing the soldier before he could ever hurt his partner.
“Aaggn!” That one soldier cried out.
Thump!
He came down to the ground, defeated.
Meanwhile, the four others had already been beaten by Maleva, the huntress.
Hunter glanced up.
Maleva was kneeling over the last soldier, dealing the final coup-de-grace. The bodies of the four soldiers sat splayed and still, no longer a threat to their village.
This battle had been a success.
Hunter was proven right to trust Maleva’s judgement again.
She might have been a pretty aggressive woman, but she knew what she was doing.
The risks paid off because they had been able to deal with this menace rather easily.
Well, it might have been easy for Maleva, but nothing was ever easy for Hunter—taking someone’s life was never easy for him.
“Thanks for being with me through and through, Hunter,” she told him.
“Don’t mention it.”
