Vol. 4 - Chapter 9: New Hard-Boiled Case

“So, tell me more about this creature who abducts people?”

“Well, you see… As I told you on the phone before… We don’t know much… What we know for sure is that whatever it is, it’s hitting us at night… We really need your help, Miss. Widdowfield. After reviewing your body of work and based on one of your most recent cases with the Plant Killer, we are convinced you are the only who can do this for us,” an old man explained to her in a dark tent. This older man was a Saurius. He was a smaller breed of Brontosaurus. His body was slightly smaller than Cynthia’s, but his neck was much, much taller than her. The tent was barely high enough for him. His head nearly touched the tent ceiling.

“That… And the fact that I am probably the only private eye willing to travel outside of town for a case, right?” She replied with, smirking at the same time as she did. Sh was making a great point. The various sounds, which could be heard from outside the tent, didn’t sound like the city. It didn’t sound like Ecstasy-City. She was somewhere else. Not only that, there were also a lot of bugs flying around inside of this tent. Something that couldn’t be observed a lot in the city where she lived. All those bugs floating around her… This wasn’t exactly something that Cynthia was into, to say the least…

“Um… Right… That would be right…” He nodded to her.

“Not even any department of police travel out here.”

“That’s also right. We are desperate. We need your help.”

“Okay. Just to confirm again, you accepted my rates, right?”

“We did. And as we told you over the phone, we are able to pay the first half upfront, and the second half after the investigation is concluded and a success…” The old man carefully explained to her.

“That works. Now, would be a good time to pay for the first half, then if you are ready,” the beauty with the long blue hair extended her arm to the old Saurius, ready to accept her payment already. She did so with a hesitant smile on her face. Almost almost she wasn’t too certain if she should be smiling in the first place.

She waited for him to give her, her payment. Impatiently.

“So… May I have my upfront payment now, Mr. Stomproot?” He asked him again, becoming even more impatient. At first, she even begin thinking that she was being played. She wasn’t interested in being messed with. She obviously didn’t appreciate the frown the Brontosaurus Saurius had on her his face as she extended her arm to him and waited to be paid, as she expected it to be the case.

“Yes. Absolutely,” he slowly replied to her. “Your first payment is waiting for you on that shelf over there,” he pointed at a different side of the tent. Cynthia immediately turned her gaze to the direction he pointed at—yes, there was indeed a piece of furniture over there, a shelf. And on it lied a large leather bag. Which made Cynthia smiled for real almost as soon as she saw it.

“Are you messing with my girl?” All of a sudden, someone else included herself into their conversation: It was Nene, white-haired, half-Saurius, half-human daughter of Gerald.

“Huh? Who is that beauty?” The old Saurius asked.

“Nene?” Cynthia turned to her, looking surprised.

“Cyn. Is everything in here?” The young lady asked her.

“I thought I’ve told you to stay outside?” She told her.

“You did. I did. For a while… But it was boring as hell. Why is taking so much time in here. Can we go already?” She grew even more impatient than the private eye already had before she entered the tent.

“Yeah. Just give me one more minute…” Cynthia resumed her walk to the other side of the tent, to the shelf, instantly grabbed the leather bag, opened it and took a look a good look inside. The primal were there. She counted. Twice. It was in there. She quickly closed the bag. Turned back to the old Brontosaurus Saurius. Smiled again. “That’s the right amount. I’ll be in touch. Thanks,” and just like that, Cynthia began stepping away from the elderly man.

“I didn’t know you had an apprentice…” He pointed out.

“I am not her apprentice!” Nene immediately told him.

“She’s really not my apprentice,” Cynthia said at the same time. The private investigator made sure to bring Nene with her in order to avoid a confrontation at all cost. “Come on. We have to go.”

“But Cyn, I’ve got to tell him that I am not your apprentice! Cyn! Cyn! What are you doing?” Nene fought back against her.

“He already know. He heard you. Come on,” Cynthia then managed to bring Nene out of the tent. “See yah!” Were the last two words she said to the old Saurius. The next second, she found herself in the middle of a hot jungle, which was far away from Ecstasy-City. They were in a small camp. This could definitely not be considered a town. She brought Nene with her. Wherever she went, she pulled her by the arm. She carried the large and heavy leather bag with her other hand. Almost as soon as they both stepped outside the tent, the people who lived here at this camp, began noticing the two outsiders, the pair of strangers from the city. Heads were turning. A general interest was building up for the two girls. A group of native men started walking toward her. Soon, the two women were surrounded by then. The natives were humans. They were not Saurius. They were even hybrids. They were just humans, and they were incredibly tall and muscular. They were not wearing much as well. They only had some kind of string made of leaves around their crotch. Nothing else.

“Um, Cynthia, who are they?” Nene asked her, concerned.

“Don’t know. They were not here earlier when we came…”

“What do they want?”

“No idea…”

“Outsiders…” One of the natives pointed at them, grunting.
