I personally believe the theory that Barney is nowhere near as crazy as he seems on the show, and that Older Ted is just an unreliable narrator (or that his memories of are different from what actually happened). I think I read somewhere that NPH likes this theory, too. IMHO it works well for the show, it gives them license to portray him as wacky as they want without it becoming completely unreasonable.
