They are 100 years back in time if you kill Tanen in 1885 there will be 100 years of choices and the influence of the Tanen family be destroyed. And I don't know how many children this Tanen has but it isn't just 1 life you take. From the Tanen in 1885 until Biff in 2015, it's at least 5 or 6 deaths if everyone in the Tanen family has only 1 kid. If they have all 2 kids it's more like 32-64 deaths. And if every Tanen family had 3 kids it would be 243-729. Those numbers are highly theoretical. But back in the day, most families had more than 3 kids. So if he kills Tanen in 1885 he takes 1 guilty life but hundreds or thousands of innocent lives. That's a curse of time travel you know that taking one life isn't really one life. Biff was the reason that Marty's parents got together so if he kills Tanen in 1885 Marty will not be born. So by killing Tanen in 1885 you stop 2 entire bloodlines!
