Weird thing is that Internations Beijing kept sending out multiple weekly meetups even when things were fairly locked down. They did have some on-line stuff as well, but it seemed odd when large fractions of the city were in soft-lockdown.

As I commented on youtube, I've felt this way for decades and it's being realized in this era. Thank you laowhy for conveying this so articulately. If I were to have a hot take it would take it one step further -- China has been colluding with Russia to shift the power, eventually by force, as we're seeing in Ukraine. They are suppressing Shanghai not just to silence its dissidents, but also to gauge the international reaction to the war. They're living in a fantasy thinking their propaganda and two faced dealings with the rest of the world will summit them overnight, and they're due for a reality check. Ukraine has shown quite clearly that the world is in fact aware despite not acting on it, but this is where my hot take starts: they're worried that going to war for Taiwan actually may not be in their best interests, and they're using covid struggles as a way to back out of their alliance with Russia. In other words, the CCP isn't just a group of deluded snakes, they're cowards too.
