Hey Laowinners,

The inbox has been full of people asking for more details about when I got arrested in China, but most of them are asking about Vivi's uncle haha.

So in case you didn't watch, a condensed form of the story is in order.
Taxi driver hits my wife. I punch taxi driver. Blood is drawn, some damage done to his face. Get arrested. Cops have to take his side because I am a foreigner. He asks for $15,000 USD. Vivi's uncle shows up. He says, "Ok, you can have $15,000 USD, but you won't be around to spend it." Drops some names. Taxi driver's friends bolt out of the police station. Taxi driver settles on $1000 of medical treatment.

Now it probably sounds like Vivi's uncle is some mafioso triad hero from an old Hong Kong movie, but from what little I know about him, I can tell you this. Vivi's uncle, let's call him Uncle Fat (like Chow Yun Fat, but actually it's cus he's really fat) got started when he finished middle school and started getting curious about all the random money that was pouring into Guangdong. He never went to college, and decided he'd get into construction, but because of his bullish nature, was able to wrangle a lot of his buddies and acquaintances to work for him. He picked up easy real estate and building contracts as the money in the 80's just couldn't be stopped with the opening of the economy. At this time, Guangdong was a very dangerous place, as the newly opened up economy left a power vacuum in a place that was previously easy to control. Money became God, and people doing big business needed connections both in government, and in the "black society", as they call it in Chinese. Vivi's uncle is not a gangster, but often told stories about how in the 80's, if they got ambushed by thugs from a rival business, they'd defend themselves with their massive brick cell phones and crack a few skulls.

People often think of the Chinese underworld or mafia as some secret thing, but thugs are thugs, and are often used to collect debt or intimidate like anywhere else in the world. Either way, he's retired and has a nice family now. The end.
