I wanted to expand on the topic of the loss of freedom in Hong Kong. Now, whether or not you have an interest in Hong Kong or not, this is China's influence on a greater scale.

Though Hong Kong was handed over back to China in 1997, it was supposed to retain it's freedom for 50 more years. However, with the recent instances of booksellers being kidnapped, and protests being forcefully stopped, it would seem Hong Kong doesn't have much of a say in this case. Now, China is banning pro-independence parties in Hong Kong, and breaking the 50 year promise even further.

China's clever way of allowing more and more mainlanders in Hong Kong to push soft power, as well as leveraging political control has created a new strategy across the world. We are seeing it more and more in western universities through the confucian institutes around the world.

The Chinese government is not stupid, and it is silently winning influence around the world.
