Causing Trouble in Vietnam

Hey Laowinners!

Today I wanted to mention a lighthearted, yet annoying thing.
Recently, some middle aged Chinese lady tourists in Vietnam were forced to change their clothing after wearing the infamous 9 dash line map of China, which claims resource rich areas off of the coast of Vietnam.
This dispute has been going on for awhile now, but the choice for these women to wear these shirts - TO VIETNAM! was a bit ridiculous to me.
I can guarantee a Vietnamese tourist would not wear an equivalent shirt.

China's world view is increasingly self centered, as you can see in crazy projects like the one belt one road project. (see the funny picture attached below for an adequate representation) and many comparisons to the USA are being made. Unfortunately, China is doing a lot right now to push a narrative to it's people that China deserves more in this world due to it's oppression from outside nations. This victimization attitude is not going to lead the country to success, but it certainly creates a veil and excuse for economic slowdown, and justification for longer party rule.

My comment mysteriously erased again? Second time? Never happened before. Hmmm. Anyway, the conflict with China is decades old, has cost hundreds of thousands Chinese lives, and plenty of Vietnamese too. The Spratly islands have transformed from a simple territorial dispute to a struggle for potentially massive resources. The US declares 200 miles national boundaries out to sea so any size island therefore would be 125,000 sq miles of exploitable area according to US declaration. New technology is and soon will make getting those resources reality(kinda like the oil sands in Canada). Vietnam is about 125,000sq miles, England is only 50,000! One island could double Vietnam’s resources. So did the transfer of sidewinder missiles to a British carrier at the start of the Falklands conflict secure England’s resource future? One thing is sure, they voted and stood with the US ever since. The future may have a US backing a coalition of nations(which may or may not include Vietnam), but will certainly include Philippines if the Chinese don’t get at their federal elections. Are those Chinese Spratly buildings only housing troops?...more likely they also house exploratory drilling operations. The next step is offshore exploration or submarine seabed test drilling, if not already happening. China isn’t building bases to oppose the US. They simply are guaranteeing a seat at the buffet.

I can't seem to find any more

On the other hand...maybe these women are not so belligerent but actually agents sent to perform a specific mission. They did attain predictable and anticipated hostility from the Vietnamese; valuable rationale to support Chinese govt policy of claiming the islands. Unfortunately for the Chinese they only collected photos of the passports with an “F U” from Vietnam to China instead of the more favorable pic of a Vietnamese officer “physically harassing our Chinese ladies”. Maybe advancements in deep water exploration(ROVs, offshore derricks) may have inspired the nations of the world to stake their claims now over whatever part of the 75% we still have yet to sit on. Can you post the entire photo collection of the ladies’ encounter?
