Hey Laowinners!
Weirdly enough, Uber has a strange story in China. It was basically taken down by a domestically grown competitor, DiDi. DiDi has now entered the vernacular of Chinese people, and it's absolutely insane on how many people use it now. So through government help, DiDi managed to wipe out it's foreign competition in China...
But China being China, one drastic crackdown (which we covered in our last ADVChina video https://youtu.be/syTW96V3Cd4) didn't solve the problem, as now China has the equivalent of taxi driver riots on its hands. The traditional taxi drivers, being on the fringes of society already (at least some of them) are now being pushed out of state jobs. Many Chinese think of the taxi driver as a last ditch effort if they want a state salary and benefits without needing the pressure of performing well at school. However, with these jobs dwindling due to DiDi, now China is trying to crack down on DiDi!
In an effort to curb protests and backlash from the state run taxi companies, they are now putting out rules and regulations to restrict DiDi drivers, and also a ton of propaganda on what to do if a DiDi driver tries to drug and rape you. In this video that has been going around, the "soldier" teaches you to first take a picture of the car, license plate, and the drivers face. Promptly send those photos to a family member or friend. Then profile his haircut, clothing, and appearance to see if he is trustworthy. Then refuse any water from them, as it could be drugged. Sit behind him directly as it is the least easy way for the driver to get at you.
Then hit the putting green for some sweet office golf practice.
I always love these targeted crackdowns in China, as they always lead to more innovation from the very business savvy Chinese people. It makes China an interesting place to be.
