For those of you wondering how a baby born in China can become a US citizen, it's actually quite simple.
Through the process of getting Olivia's citizenship, I managed to find out some weird details about the Chinese side of the story.
If you are born in China, you are a Chinese citizen. Even if you obtain USA citizenship, you are fully a Chinese citizen. Because dual citizenship is not recognized, you have to renounce your Chinese citizenship, get a special book that allows you to leave the country, and then return on your American passport with a Chinese visa.
Olivia obtained her American citizenship at the USA consulate in Guangzhou. We needed our marriage certificate, her birth certificate translated into English. My old passport to prove that I lived in America for a long enough time. Vivi's ID, and all of the required forms. It cost about $200 to report her birth abroad, and get her an American passport.
A lot of people are bewildered as to why I chose USA citizenship over Chinese for my daughter. It's really a no brainer. Traveling is easier, and if we have to get out we can get out in a jiffy. The last thing I want is to be stuck in China with my daughter not being able to leave.
To answer a few people who ask me why I don't get a Chinese green card instead of getting a visa every year. The simple answer is, YOU CANNOT GET A CHINESE GREENCARD.
Most westerners are used to laws being working, and real things. For example, if you get pulled over by a cop for doing 100 mph in a 60, you will probably get a ticket. In China, that's not the way things work. Although there is a law that says foreigners can get a China green card, in practice, you can't. Very few foreigners have been granted it. You have to contribute military knowledge, scientific discovery, invest millions etc. On top of that, I don't know why you would want Chinese citizenship. It's a real pain in the ass to travel on a Chinese passport.Anyway, summer is closing down, and that means back to work... Well I already was working, but now EVEN MORE!Thanks for watching laowinners!!!
