Fast food is not my thing.
For some reason I have never enjoyed it. I have always been a fairly health conscious person, so maybe that has something to do with it.
So, you can imagine that shooting this episode wasn't the most enjoyable for me.
However, I find it fascinating how well KFC did here. Growing up, I never thought of KFC as a massive fast food chain. There are so many others that are so much more popular, but here in China, KFC is king.
With so many menu items, it is quite amazing what the company managed to come up with to cater to the Chinese public (a notoriously difficult market to capture).
While I don't like the food, millions of Chinese people flock to 4,000+ chains everyday.
The reason that McDonalds never managed to do as well as KFC is the Chinese preference for chicken over beef.
Beef has never been a big protein source for Asians, but chicken has been typically more abundant. It might have to do with the ease of raising them. You can see chickens literally everywhere in China. Running around people's balconies, in the street, in alleyways, and even strapped, live, to the back of motorcycles.
The golden arches may take the crown worldwide, but in the middle kingdom, the Colonel still reigns supreme.
