Hey Laowinners,
Everyone always asks me, "how did you meet your wife?"
When I first got to China, I didn't speak a lick of Chinese. Life was tough for the first couple weeks. New money, new language, new setting, new climate, new timezone... It was hard to get settled down.
2 weeks in, I had to go to the supermarket to buy a few things that I wanted to replace (toothbrush etc) and I was wandering around.
I saw a cute girl near the produce isle, and I smiled at her. To my delight, she smiled back. She also spoke English!
We chatted for a few minutes, and she told me that she was from Huizhou, but she goes to university in Macau.
After awhile, I asked for her phone number, but she refused to give it to me. However, she gave me her name, which I tracked down on facebook.
Unfortunately, when I went on facebook, I saw that she was living in Macau Philippines! Not in China!
I didn't add her for a few days due to the fact that there was no way I'd be able to see her, but I noticed that her photo was taken in Macau, China. I added her anyway, and we began chatting. She had actually made a mistake when selecting her location, so she did, in fact, live in China.
A few weeks later, I was traveling in Thailand. I had been pickpocketed, and lost my bank card, so with my last 25 Baht, I went to an internet cafe and tried to get ahold of my bank and some folks back in New York.
Vivi (my wife) popped on the chat feed, and I told her my tale, to which she replied, "are you asking me for money?" I said no, and that I simply would like to see her if I ever made it back. She agreed.
A week later, we met up and 7 years later, here we are.
So yes. I married the first Chinese girl I met. Weird.
