Father Ted - Season 2 Episode 5 A Song for Europe

Comments

The "play the f---ing note" scene is a reference to The Troggs Tapes from 1970, a bootleg recording of English rock band The Troggs arguing during a recording session.

Steve Webster

Ohhh didn’t catch that

😂

Before you started this series I had seen some but the only one I could remember was the Christmas Special... I think this might be my favourite so far. JUST PLAY THE FUCKING NOTE. I will use at some point.

Andy

i thought i saw somewhere that someone mentioned it was the same actor in this that hosted the show and the cinema owner in the passion of st tibulus. That was Jon Kenny and he died a year ago unfortunately, he reminds me of Bernard cribbins in the face sometimes

Nick Jarrett

Just had to cancel my membership, due to lack of funds. I am covered till 23rd November. I will still watch on Youtube.

Jules

An extra facet to this whole thing is that in the year this is set, 1996, Ireland did in fact win Eurovision! So My Lovely Horse must have got a late surge of points.

Aetheling

My lovely horse as well as the theme song (songs of love), written by the massively talented Neil Hannon of the Divine Comedy. Maybe something to look into in the future.

Mark Griffin

Just play the f**king note!!!

Sang by Midge Ure, but by Ultravox. Of course Midge Ure and Billy Currie were originally in Visage, who did Fade to Gray. Midge Ure replaced John Foxx as Ultravox's vocalist, when he decided to go solo. I think Underpass was Foxx's best known song. I was born in the mid-90s but grew up in a household that played mostly new wave, post-punk, synthpop, new romantic, and goth rock. As a result, I know my David Sylvian to my Bryan Ferry, my Thomas Dolby to my Falco, my Ian Curtis to my Adam Ant, my Dave Gahan to my Phil Oakey, and so on and so forth.

Taylor picks up on stuff far quicker.

The inspiration for this episode came from the allegations in 1994 from some in the media that Rock 'n' Roll Kids by Paul Harington and Charlie McGettigan was chosen to deliberately lose the Eurovision Song Contest. Ireland had won Eurovision in 92 and 93 and winning it means you have to host it again the following year. The myth was that it was too expensive to keep hosting it so the organisers wanted Ireland to lose. In any case Rock 'n' Roll Kids ended up winning the Eurovision Song Contest with a record points total and a 3 in-a-row for Ireland which had never been done before. Ireland also won the Eurovision in 1996 a few weeks after this episode of Father Ted came out.

David

Just because of this episode I signed up to your channel to see your reaction, it's my favourite as I love Eurovision and this song quite often in my head 😄

when Stephen was teaching taylor about his jam sessions, all i could focus on was the ned flanders moustache. Its one of those things where you look at a person speaking and trying to comprehend and understand and then you get sidetracked focusing visually over mentally, if that makes sense.

Nick Jarrett

My lovely horse, you're a pony no more.

Nick Jarrett

Even then we one thanks to an American!

This actually happens, some countries put out songs deliberately so bad that they will lose so they can’t host! To give to an example of the Eurovision in Liverpool, they had to delay a elton john gig that was pre booked for the event, ether refund or move the tickets, there was debate in that where to put the actual event where some arenas said no because they were not moving their event! Then there’s the cost, to film it, broadcast it all over the world, they had to block book hotels, they had to pay overtime for police & security! So no most countries don’t want to win! If you watch Eurovision the voting it blatantly rigged anyway, with countries voting for certain countries!

Andi Main

I remember the group and song, but didn't know the year they won.

Jules

Out of the 5 remaining episodes of season 2, I have 3 favourites. I won't tell you which just yet. (All the episodes are good, but we're not all going to like all of them.)

Jules

That song on Dougal's record is from 1976! That year Britain won the Eurovision with "Save Your Kisses For Me" by The Brotherhood of Man. :)

Darryl Glynn

It’s definitely that one

Kieran B

That was the joke, it was the B side of Dougal’s only record and he said he’d never heard it until then. Taylor is right as per usual 😄

Kieran B

Remember the episode The Passion of St. Tibulus (se1 ep03), where they had to protest the movie? Well the guy we couldn't understand, played the cinema Manager.

Jules

The last time the U.K. won the Eurovision was in 1997. Katrina and the Waves sang for us. The song was called 'Love Shine a Light.'

Jules

Of all the songs called Vienna, I'd always thought it was the early 80s one by Ultravox.

Mac

A few years ago the Ukraine won. But because of the ongoing conflict, the U.K. hosted it the year after. It was held in Birmignham here in England. But it was on behalf of the Ukraine.

Jules

Song for Europe is the 1st step before The Eurovision. If you get past the Eurosong competition, then you go to the Eurovision, in the host nation for that year. If your country wins the Eurovision, they become the host nation the next year. Dick was right in saying the reason they picked Ted & Dougal, is because they knew T & D would lose and Ireland wouldn't host the year after. They didn't want the expense.

Jules

I have been looking forward to this. It had some Canadian YouTube reactors, crying with laughter. Especially when they were trying to compose their song entry and Ted had a swering meltdown.
