Patreon Q&A November

Hello Patrons,
Here's the response to the questions asked a few days ago. We got through most of them but we merged some of the similar ones and didn't have time to do a few more because this already went for over an hour.

Jordan goes pretty in-depth on a lot of different topics so the whole thing is definitely worth a watch!

Good luck trying to create an Australian public service where people are appointed/promoted on merit. We use the American, Dale Carnegie system of brown-nosing here. You have to 'align' with those above you, much in the way a worm might align itself with a combine harvester.

I’ve never been a “gen”. I despised the Human Resources department on creation in the 70/80s. I agree that Singapore is well run (hmmm not so sure since Mr Lee died) but if you like shopping and gardens, deny all gays exist, citizens are treated like children, suddenly the police are brandishing machine guns on your 10 minute commute to work. I’m not so sure that in reality people really want to live in that sort of system? For the well educated and elites it’s great but for others it’s deadly boring. Democracy might be disappearing but it does hold a lot of succour for the majority. At least if someone is an idiot … like Pauline Hanson we recognise it and ponder why the taxpayer is keeping her afloat . Kangaroo Island and Singapore are the same size .

Thanks for all those answers. I think the thing that bothers me the most when there’s talk of people too blind to see, is dismissiveness of poverty as systemically created. Australia isn’t the wealthiest nation in the world, but it is close. Nobody should live in class segregated suburbs - where money is expected never to flow to them, and possibilities and hope of ever getting out are removed. Yet Australia appears to be accepting this - spoon fed that these are responsible for their own fate. Poverty cycles in and removes everyday more, as what it’s costs to be poor is more expensive than what others pay. So many examples of this. Car insurance is one. I don’t think it okay to segregate by class. I think healthy democratic societies look after their own and don’t leave them homeless and on the street getting moved on, robbed, demonised. This is a lucky country, but it’s leaving too many behind. Getting ahead looks easy when you’re comfortable or believe you will be. I don’t want a politician that cannot have compassion. And I can’t get past that thought: nobody votes to be left behind. Nobody wants to be poor, homeless, jobless, seen as less or not worthy. Everyone deserves dignity and respect. Whinging? Reality? Might depend on what side of that class line you’re on. 🤔 always be aware of personal bias. You have to have a go to get a go: said Morrison and his merry band of liars and leaners. He lied. What he should have said you have to know someone or be a friend to someone they know to get a go.

I’m a long term Assange supporter and will ensure people who can reach him hear you’re interested in an interview. That would be awesome! Copy that.

Oooh Them’s fighting words indeed Jordies! I’m Gen X. So is Assange btw, and I would LOVE to see that. You’re wrong about later generations being better off economically in Australia. If you don’t own a home you won’t if you don’t have help from parents. 5% deposits have essentially been overridden by APRA stating if a borrowers income isn’t alone able to furnish a loan they’ll deny it. Worried about another sub prime mortgage crisis and economic crash. Just today predictions of an interest rate hike due to unexpected inflation in October. The class disparity is widening and the cost of living to earnings ratio declining steadily, and rapidly now. I’m Generation X, a proud Australian, bitterly disappointed with our democracy. Nobody votes to be left behind.

The biggest slowdown for me when I was building my Mum a granny flat was the bargaining and multiple submission attempts through the council. They don’t tell you all the non-compliant issues in one go, so you fix one problem, resubmit, then have to wait for the next problem to be given again. We had 8 revisions to the plans before even a shovel went into the ground. Not saying that I want a non-compliant build but please, they knew these problems ahead of time, why not give me everything all at once!?

Please make an edit of Sussan Ley in The Simpsons movie where Grandpa Simpson has a vision of EPA in the church.

I was at one of your last Sydney shows and fuck there was some bitch just drunkenly spewing shit the whole night. I can't believe there was no security.

I was thinking that once we have a better handle on climate change the next big challenge we'll need to face is the forever chemicals (including plastics). Had a bloke give a talk on the subject at my Uni's seminar series - they had to change the definition of male sterility because everyone started falling under that criteria due to chemical exposure. He was also talking about multiple places in australia where pollution screening/consultation should be given to people who want to start a family. I think it's unfortunate that Betoota present themselves as 'unbiased' and that people treat them as an information source.

Need to know wtf is the deal with Kevin Rudd in the Epstein emails

Thanks for doing the Q&A. A benevolent dictator is a sure way to get things done fast. Hopefully they stay benevolent. I believe that scientific reasearch for industry and society is crucial for the development and improved quality of life for all of us. If the department isnt working properly, you change the management not cut the funding.
