To each his or her own, I live in East Tennessee in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I can't see me going to Ohio for nature but then I didn't have an aunt or uncle living there. If I did I might feel differently. All I know is I watch a great deal of true crime and it seems every other case is in Ohio.

Ohio is okay. I spent lots of weekends in Batavia, OH with my Aunt and Uncle. They lived about a mile from the river. This is back when it was a small town. I always loved going there because I loved nature. It was a picturesque place.

I don't think it was a burglary at all. I think that it was used to minimize or somehow rationalize what he had done and make it seem not so goddamn awful. Not to mention the 2 grown women but he murdered a young boy - and then kidnapped the boy's sister and did who knows what to her .... to cover up a botched robbery? Why not kill the girl too? Oh yeah, because she was likely his target all along.
Yes, he's human. Yes, he certainly has issues. And yes, he's an absolute dickwad. His attitude makes me loathe him even more *shudder*

if it was a burglary and he killed the mom then panicked and killed the others as they arrived, etc then why did he also kill the dog? it seems like he went there with the intention to kill them and take the daughter

To be honest, Ohio scares me half to death. I nearly moved there but changed my mind once I read about all the very strange crime that goes on there. I'll just stay right here in East Tennessee where the crimes are typical and he killers leave the bodies where they fall instead of hiding them in the leaves. As always, loved the video. You're amazing. Love ya and take care of yourself!

Yet again, you set the bar incredibly high. No one does true crime like you (except for those who attempt, and fail to, copy you), or can even hold a candle to your skill with storytelling. Another great video!

*jo hand gesture* He certainly looked like he was closed off to me hon. He is still human, no matter the horrid shit he does, and it certainly is something to always keep in mind. Everyone has the capacity for 'evil', even you. You just don't know what will bring it out, yet. And yes, I was speculating and conflating it with certainty, but you don't know either :) All we had here is snippets, after all. And why the fuck would he claim mental illness? His actions point very obviously to catastrophising, what with the whole 'please shoot me in an escape attempt' thing which, as someone with major anxiety, is something I could see myself asking for if I was ever somehow in that situation. Again, let me remind you he is human and therefore has human emotions and acts on those emotions.

not sure I believe all of his story about it being a burglary that went very wrong. Yes, it's believable that he killed the mum in a panic, then got surprised by the neighbour, but he could have taken those bodies away before the children came home from school. Also, if you're killing people 'in a panic,' why kill the dog? I believe it was small, and their house looked pretty isolated. It was hardly going to bark the house down and warn someone nearby, which is the only 'rational' reason I can think of to kill a pet. It's not going to dial 911 and identify the killer. Maybe he was after the teen girl all along. Poor child. Hope she's ok.

Wow, Hailey, that's a long list of diagnoses you have there. Any evidence for any of them? In particular paranoia? Schizophrenia??? Any actual signs of anxiety or depression that compromised his life?
All of us have tendencies toward any number of things: if those tendencies don't affect our functioning: they're not diagnosable and may not even be problems.
Except for hoarding leaves & wanting to fuck trees: which are fetishes: this guy had no overwhelming signs of any of your "mentally ill" list.
He is evil. Broke in to a house, murdered 3 people, kidnapped the 4th. But he didn't subject her to his fetish. Showed no signs of anxiety, paranoia, or schizophrenia during questioning or trial, never claimed a defense based on mental illness.

At first I figured he was using the leaves to add insulation to the house which would be like hay bales, as some people do. Thought he was broke and could afford no heat or something...but nope, it was something else.
We can bet he isn't going to adapt well to incarceration.
Caroline Evans

I'd bet he's pining for some leaves. When the judge offered him a plea deal for his cooperation, Matt said oakey-dokey. He was relieved to get segregation, even if he would be board.
It's a fact that other prisoners don't like paedos or child killers. They would be delighted to beat him to death. If he's beaten senseless, , and the guards are quick, he maple through the beating. I don't know about yew, but I think the pos should rot in prison. Death is too good for him.

He's very obviously mentally ill with major anxiety, paranoia, depression and i'd hazard a guess at the beginnings of schizophrenia. Considering his past with burglary it definitely makes sense that he was burglarising the house, and then when tina came home he panicked and ended up killing her, then when panicking and trying to figure out what to do, the other woman came over and he felt no choice in the moment but to murder her as well, etc etc and it all spiraled out of his control. He probably kidnapped the girl because he thought he was already in enough shit, might as well. I always love when the cops say stuff like 'We WILL find them!' when statistically speaking, do they??? And they would almost certainly have never found those bodies since they were stuffed in a fucking tree of all places.

Really, really weird, this one! And mean, too! No onne kills almost an entire family and kidnaps the one that survived because of "a burglary gone terribly, terribly wrong"... To me, it seemed even his lawyer was embarrassed for having to make that statement... Thanks, Mike, as always. Have a wonderful week, even if it is raining. Love ya!

Oh my lord poor Sarah I hope that she is able to get passed this nightmare experience. Not get passed it but maybe more like heal from it. It can’t have been easy to lose your mom and brother in such a brutal way and be kidnapped and tied up in the psychos basement. At least he has no chance of getting out and hurting anyone else not that that comforts Sarah and her remaining family. Thanks Mike for always bringing us high quality content!
