Homestead - Chapter One: The Shack

The storm pressed against the walls of the shack, its voice a low and endless growl. Wind found every gap in the wood, howling through cracks, rattling the loose shutters until they clapped like old bones. Inside, the air was thick with dust and the sharp tang of damp earth.

A she-wolf lay weak on her side, ribs rising and falling shallowly, her golden eyes dim but resolute. She had nothing left but the pup pressed against her belly. The little one — a periwinkle-coated husky with black eyes, new to the world — squeaked and squirmed against her mother’s warmth.

The mother gathered what strength she had left, nudging her pup forward. Its name would not be carried in her voice, but in the touch of her muzzle, the insistence of her push. A plea for survival.

The door scraped as it opened against the wind, and in the threshold stood a wolf-fox hybrid, tall, lean, his coat darkened by rain. His mane bristled along his neck, a restless shadow made flesh. His eyes were steady, though, his face set neutral, as though carved from the storm itself.

He stepped closer, paws silent on the worn floorboards. The pup tumbled forward with a tiny whimper, and her mother pushed again, urging her toward him. The meaning was plain.

For a long moment, he stood over them, unmoving, ears pinned against the storm’s voice outside. His chest rose and fell, and the wild air that clung to him seemed to pause with him.

Then, lowering his head, he took the pup gently by the scruff. She dangled, squeaking once, but he was careful — protective already.

The mother’s eyes closed, the last of her strength given away.

The storm slammed against the shack again, furious, but inside there was a hush. The pup’s small body swung against her father’s chest as he lifted her by the scruff and carried her out. His face betrayed nothing, but his stance was iron.

He would keep her safe.
