Re: free episode EKY video stores Leslie county had Pearl’s. It wasn’t in town, it was up stinnett, convenient to me and ever friend I had. Pearl was a gay older man and he had a younger bf. No one seemed to care. Adult videos and tanning beds in the back. Full size pepsi for trick or treat. Every sleepover I ever had included a trip to Pearl’s. The building is still there but the video store is no more.

Billion-dollar prison industry; 14-year old nephew coded the funny-money system. "I just put a minus-symbol in front of the amount" is the level of hacking you would see in the in-game banking system of an Apple II game. //I looked it up, and the streaming service is called Jpay. I came across a few "get your independent music on more platforms, aka, Jpay" outfits, but the actual details of what goes on there is a little murky. Independent artists with clean-lyrics can submit directly to Jpay, but there's also options for inmates to request "acts such as the Beatles, Taylor Swift, etc". There are several articles in the New York Times and NPR about this, and they all feature very popular music like Taylor Swift, but don't go into the nitty gritty about exactly how that works. My guess is that whatever label that holds these artists can work directly with Jpay for licensing (at what's presumably a pretty good return). I spent about half an hour trying to get into how it actually works, but it feels purposefully opaque, and I'm also not equipped enough to parse legal documents (for music or anything else) anyway. So my guess is that on a low-level, independent artists submit their stuff to Jpay like they would Itunes or similar, and on a high level like Beyonce, "your music gets licensed to be listened to in prison" is probably so far-removed from the artist that it can't be construed as some kind of political stance either way. in short, I think "big artists" are probably licensed out on a per-song-basis, at a very favorable price; both to off-set the risk to your reputation by being associated with prisons, but also because for-profit-prisons are ruthlessly predatory and obviously morally bankrupt. So It wouldn't surprise me if the family of an inmate has paid the equivalent of 200 dollars through Jpay tokens for an mp3 of "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)". ...Obviously conjecture, but everything I've heard about US for-profit-prison closed-loop economics is that the baseline pricing for just about anything is "hotel mini-bar" (12 dollar coke, etc). I see no reason why digital purchases wouldn't be equally arbitrary/predatory. //EDIT2: Also found this on Prisonpolicy.com (https://www.prisonpolicy.org/blog/2019/03/07/free-tablets/) "In 2017, the Florida Department of Corrections transitioned from MP3 players to tablets and people who had bought hundreds or thousands of dollars of music lost access to the music on the MP3 players, as they were confiscated as contraband when replaced with tablets." Looks like Florida Corrections took the Nintendo-approach when transitioning platforms.

Not relevant to this episode, but your guy in Elden Ring is “a lowly tarnished of no renown.” You are just some no name dipshit who got dragged into things by following Godfrey.

Hey guys— I don’t know if you read these but I couldn’t find an email— but I have a lead on a story you should cover. It’s not getting any mainstream news coverage. It takes place in WV. Jim Justice, the fat nepo baby former democrat/former billionaire/former WV governor & future senator who owns 300k acres of WV including 30 major coal mines and every grain farm bought the Greenbrier resort during the financial crash. He took out $30 million in COVID PPP loans he never paid off. He has not paid millions in property taxes so the state put the Greenbrier up for auction— but his crony judges are halting it. Here’s the real kicker: his 2000 hotel employees have been having healthcare costs deducted from their wages BUT NONE OF THAT MONEY WENT TO THE HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANY SO ALL OF HIS EMPLOYEES ARE LOSING THEIR INSURANCE. We live in absolute fucking hell because of these villainous, soulless billionaires who scam the system, defraud good people, and endanger the lives of laborers for the sake of profit.

Steve Sladkowski seems to be a friend of every podcast I really enjoy

I really enjoyed this episode, you guys. Thank you 🌟

It's crazy to listen to a whole episode with a guy from a band I love and not know it's him til the last 2 minutes

Beef

This is how Trump gets back in the game. He does a VP style Apprentice. He gets JD on TV and fires his ass on live television without telling him why he's on the show. Then people start trying out for the VP slot.

As a music nerd who’s been seething since Tarence said some not nice things about emo and insinuated Taking Back Sunday did not age well, having Steve from PUP on did a lot for me. I’m kidding about the seething part! Love the pod, great episode as always!!!

Marie

I totally agree about the Midwest/Ontario connections but also think there are profound differences between Minnesota and Ohio. It mostly boils down to labor being more valued in MN and Ohio has less monoculture. Minnesotans are also very proud, sometimes smug, while Ohio thinks their state is a dump but they love it anyway.

Fuckin Reds.

But Biden was the most progressive president since FDR!!! 🤡

David Exelby

Just started listening but I wanted to say regarding the Dems framing Trump as the incumbent, The Pod Save guys just talked in an episode about how that was Kamala’s strategy as well. It seems to be working but it’s insane that the actual Democratic line is that Biden was Trumps second term.

Thank you for the episode brother Tom. I hope your comrades are doing okay. Even a dim light does better than no light in a lighthouse, and you boys are nothing if not a guiding light to many in these troubling times. Even if it may not always feel like it, you boys matter

Thomas

Can confirm that Chicago is a late town. I have had some of the most fun and WILD nights of my life in Chicago.
