Buying beer for minors is often referred to as a Hey Mister
Nick
2024-08-17 18:11:29 +0000 UTC
I understand *why* it happens ( being "in university" making people self-consciously assume that a straight-forward or "on its face" analysis is dumb and naive and a complicated one is smarter, an implicit understanding that "soft-sciences are not real science" giving way to over-correcting in use of what sounds like technical jargong, the brain's ability to basically self-hypnotize conclusions that may or may not be real and doing so feels almost intoxicating at times, etc, etc).
...So I get all that. But *because* of those reasons, I think it's really important that people are honest about themselves, and not confuse what is essentially self-indulgence with communication.
You kinda have to be real with yourself, and ask if you're "communicating or masturbating, right now".
I think if you're very young (early to late 20's; I'm 41), it's really easy to essentially rediscover quasi-religious, trance-work that the human brain can do (for fictional examples of this, see "The Master" from 2012).
"bodies and spaces" is the running joke online for this, but it being overly derisive doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't capture something real.
It really is super-easy for a sorta smart person to trance-work yourself into what seems and feels like an ecstatic truth, and *because* of that, the onus is really on the person to check themself, and dare to be brutally honest (ie, being prepared to admit that you don't know what you're talking about, and just trying to save a sky-high tower built on an unsound foundation).
I know because I did this for many years, and I think it's really useful for anyone who went to school for soft sciences to be really honest with yourself about it (if you want to be a more precise thinker and communicator. Or to just avoid being insufferable to most people; including other people who also went to Important School).

The worst thing you can ever do when hoping to relate to people who don't have terminally online, (primarily lib) brain damage is slip into academia language. No one gives a shit about dialectics, no one wants to talk zeitgeist, or talk optics etc. In fact, a lot of regular people (even many who went through college) tend to get on edge -- very similar to the way someone with minimal religious background might cower at someone speaking in tongues. I think you REALLY nailed the analogy in an extremely succinct, useful way.
I never took on academic speak because I went to college at 26 (which is like, elderly in the US college system) and as a result I still talk like a hick-from-the-sticks. I find that it's an incredibly useful skill when I have to relay information from an academic/formal setting to my dipshit bumpkin brethren. It's nice!

My thoughts exactly. There’s a difference between the land owner and the labour that work the land.
Automation, industrialisation and consolidation has reduced demand for said labour, but I would contend (definitely biased as I am said farm labour) that the workers out number the owners 10:1. It’s the same as any other industry, exploitation of workers funneling wealth upwards.

//friday:
I was going to say that academia-language is a variant of cop-speak, but I think it's honestly closer to "speaking in tongues" in that it's deeply meaningful to the one doing it, borderline inscrutable - if not completely so - to others, but similar enough in tone, pitch and other modulations that it's immediately recognizable (and fairly easy for just about anyone to dip into).
I think it took a good 5 years or so to learn how to write legibly after my stint at university.

Loved the pod fellas.
When Americans think of farmers they think of farm bosses, because that's all we are ever shown on TV or by politicians. The vast majority of people doing the farming are low wage farm workers. I think it's easy to delineate between the two, just as in any industry.
Historically farm workers were separated from all other labor through law. It started with black farm workers and now has continued with the mostly Hispanic farm workers. They are not guaranteed the same rights that any other worker in America has, such as a minimum wage or overtime pay.

Zyn is for girls and kids. In sweden we call it ”girl-snus”. The smoking rate among the youth had been declining. Then the white snus came along and the youths and girls starter to use nicotine again. It was a way for the tobaccocompany to not lose a targetgroup.

Farmers who don’t own land are working class. Whether that is a person leasing land to farm or working for a farm without ownership. Feels like working class has a cool pedigree while also being a place any working class person would gladly leave w a winning lottery ticket. Love yous 🤠

A few days 'fore he turned eighty
He was sitting out back in a rocker
He said, "What you been up to lately?"
I told him, "Chasing a dollar"
And in between sips of coffee
He poured this wisdom out
Said, "If you want my two cents on making a dollar count
Buy dirt
Find the one you can't live without
Get a ring, let your knee hit the ground
Do what you love but call it work
And throw a little money in the plate at church
Send your prayers up and your roots down deep
Add a few limbs to your family tree
And watch their pencil marks
And the grass in the yard
All grow up
'Cause the truth about it is
It all goes by real quick
You can't buy happiness
But you can buy dirt"
Before you get caught on that ladder
Let me tell you what it's all about
Find you a few things that matter
That you can put a fence around
And then he laid it out
Buy dirt
Find the one you can't live without
Get a ring, let your knee hit the ground
Do what you love but call it work
And throw a little money in the plate at church
Send your prayers up and your roots down deep
And add a few limbs to your family tree
And watch their pencil marks
And the grass in the yard
All grow up
'Cause the truth about it is
It all goes by real quick
You can't buy happiness
But you can buy dirt
You can buy dirt
And thank the good Lord for it
'Cause He ain't makin' any more of it
So buy dirt
Find the one you can't live without
Get a ring, let your knee hit the ground
Do what you love but call it work
And throw a little money in the plate at church
Send your prayers up and your roots down deep
Add a few limbs to your family tree
Watch their pencil marks
And the grass in the yard
All grow up
'Cause the truth about it is
It all goes by real quick
You can't buy happiness
But you can buy dirt

There's no such thing as "baker's chocolate" the same way there's no "cooking wine". If it's not fit for direct consumption, it just becomes a cheap way to ruin something comparatively expensive that you're cooking.
I mean, there is something sold in the store called baker's chocolate. But they only do that to trick inexperienced home-cooks and kill their budding interest early.
Thanks for switching back to the old comment-format. Time to get drunk and write something barely coherent.

I would say for your football comparison that college football players are an especially good example of this. Many end up having similar CTE issues but never go on to make NFL money and thus get both the "job-associated risks" while also having to struggle as someone middle class or working poor, not including all the stuff about poor college students who were players for big college football teams and got in trouble for even accepting free meals.

You say the drag of it is the draw. When I think of rural working clothes I think overalls. Maybe that’s a east coast thing but my grandmother and grandfather wore overalls for farm work. A clip on tie was for dressing up. When I lived in Kansas guys would get into enthusiastically primp ing and quietly worry and ask if they looked good in cowboy hats and boots. It kinda looks like costumes to me. I mean I’m not gonna wear a Star Trek costume around. If that your thing enjoy. Maybe where there is a problem is when they can’t openly call it cosplay or primping and act extra bigoted towards trans folks as cover?

I have a second hand Trump story. I studied jazz in college. One of my instructors was a fantastic pianist (Randy Hoexter shoutout). He was hired to play some fancy function Trump was attending in the Apprentice years. He starts playing some standard and one of Trump’s handlers rushes over with a panicked look on his face and says “Mr Trump does NOT like jazz!” So he played pop songs. Knowing what we know now, he really should have switched to showtunes. I’m sure he would have enjoyed that.
