i don't know about other animals, but dogs and cats roughly approximate to the intelligence of a toddler. anything i see a person do to their cats or dogs i imagine them doing to their toddlers. disquietingly mixed bag, my younger self sadly included if i'm being brutally honest. though at least i can say i never trapped a pet in a permanent cycle of ever-present punishment fear/anxiety over things they very likely either can't control or don't understand.
