OK I really need a way to get around the Financial Times paywall. Hook me up

Language isn't prescriptive. I've always heard it pronounced "buh-NAHL" therefore it's not wrong.

Maybe it’s a correctly pronouncing it thing? https://www.google.com/search?q=banal&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari

i've always heard it said "ba-nahl." maybe a regional thing?

Guys it’s pronounced “banle” like anal with a b. Sorry it’s just been bothering me for a few weeks.

The sports issue is familiar to me. I never got into sports as entertainment until the last couple of years. My boyfriend is a college football guy and I realized my issue is that sports like basketball and football on a professional level is boring for the reasons you guys are talking about. With college ball, whether it's football or basketball, there's this element of emerging talent, but there's still mystery and excitement to it. You never know when you're going to see these college kids pull out some of the most amazing plays you've ever seen just after running some of the most ridiculous plays. That's what I like about college football. All the conferences have different styles of playing the game. The coaches seem to have more influence over the players, so there's more direct action in the game that can change the direction play by play. Also, college players have so much personality because they're really kids out there being super pumped about what they're up to.

Often lately when I come across some ridiculous spectacle that our culture has produced - upside down drummer being a nice example - I think: "is this why we genocided the Native Americans? So we can have monster truck rallies, superbowl flyovers, and upside down drummers for a few years?" Was it worth it?

T’s hypothetical (and cyclical) future about drumming reminded me think of the hermetic phrase “as above, so below”. Bringing it up cuz i bet y’all would be entertained by the wikipedia rabbit hole which surrounds that phrase and hermeticism. This of course was my like 84th browser tab for months before i dove in— A practice i hope you fellas revisit someday on the show.

I was dying over the air traffic controller story and showed my friend who happens to be a veteran of the punk scene. He said he used to play with a guy by the name of Dino in a band called the Murder Junkies who upheld a similar tradition. I wonder if it's the same guy...either way, truly spectacular lol

The Dirt - the 2019 Motley Crue movie is a must watch. American cinema at its best.

From BBC News today, devil’s milkshake alive and well: “Hours before the announcement, the Ohio governor and EPA chief together drank water in an effort to show the East Palestine municipal tap water was safe.”

Malcolm Collie

gotta get the little drummer boy upside down

It's no air controller trick but this drum solo from the Permanent Vacation tour addresses the issue of the drummer having to sit in one place (starting at about 3m) in the goofiest way I've ever seen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=239q3uWqTSs
