2022-08-08 17:10:36 +0000 UTCStargate SG-1 is probably the closest show I can think of that combines aliens and west wing type diplomacy. It is of course extremely amerocentric and pro military but overall it's a decent show for it's time.

2022-08-04 07:19:07 +0000 UTCI was staying at my parents house when it got flooded in hurricane sandy. Zone A, 12 foot tidal surge, 4 feet of ocean inside the house. We started a mutual aid group out of their house. Here’s some general info regarding my experience that might be helpful. FEMA will be slow. Red Cross is useless. As much as this sucks, you’re in a position now to be the change you’d like to see in the world. There will be volunteers in and out of your community, the best thing you can do to help is organize them. We created a sign in station in my parents front yard. We took names and phone numbers of folks who wanted to volunteer. We asked who had what skills. People with a logistical skill set were set up with WiFi hotspots and put together small crews of volunteers. We had bike messengers distributing fliers and going door to door to write needs down, and would report back to the organizers. then we would assign each house a crew. We had “block captains” who would oversee that. Each were given a walkie talkie. They would also be responsible for the safety of each crew. We used EMTs to give vaccinations to folks who were going into homes. Hepatitis etc. If we smelled gas we would remove everyone from the situation and reach out to firefighters in the community to oversee turning off gas etc. electricians helped ensure flood water wasn’t going to cause a shock. Plumbers, contractors, etc were each given assignments as overseers for the mass of otherwise regular folks who didn’t know trades but wanted to help. If you do something like this, you will become a beacon for folks and resources will be dropped off to you by others who want to help. You’ll attract resources. People will help you. We got a lot of donations in the form of contractor bags, shovels, general hardware. We were given too much food so we distributed that. A great morale booster right now - find a cook and have them turn on a grill and start feeding people. One guy in our neighborhood put together a pig roast. Others just handed out burgers. THIS IS IMPORTANT: A friend told me that “Acts of god” will keep insurance from paying out. This friend got a big hammer and smashed their pipes and their neighbors pipes before the insurance adjuster came in. “The pipes burst.” It wasn’t the flood water that affected them. They weren’t flooded by nature. And as such their insurance payed out. This is an awkward thing to say but putting the loss of human life aside, the month I spent helping my community was the best month of my life. It hurt and it was stressful and it was confusing but seeing people in my community come together was life changing. Being a part of that was a privilege. Things will get better. It’s gonna take a couple months. But right now the only thing to do is to help. Please get in touch with me if you need help organizing. Subbed after I saw the unlocked post to write this. Set up an account for donations if you haven’t yet and I’d be happy to give what I can.

2022-08-03 16:13:02 +0000 UTCThe term “1000-year flood” that’s being bandied about in media headlines is a boldfaced misnomer.

2022-08-02 17:03:37 +0000 UTCI used to live in the UK and our village and my house got flooded in 2000. Most stressful time of my life and it sticks with me like some form of PTSD still when I’m looking for places to live. My dad worked for the power company and purloined a load of flood defense gear for me and I have kept it to this day, even when we lived in the freaking desert in Idaho. It’s my talisman. I did my US teacher cert in Louisville and KY remains in my heart from Pacific NW these days. You guys can use my Patreon money however you bloody well want.

2022-08-02 13:26:30 +0000 UTCSolidarity from Louisiana. I've been through Katrina, the 2016 floods, & Ida, but imagining the flash flooding through the valleys up there blows my mind. Monstrous. Please take as long of a break as you need. How you even have time & resources to record right now is staggering. Thank you.

2022-08-02 13:10:25 +0000 UTCAfter listening to you for a few years, I trust ya’ll to know where best to put the aid in your community. I have comrades in NKY and SE OH wanting to know where to send aid. If that’s an account that you specifically set up or if it’s EKY mutual aid, I’ll take your word for it. Just let us know. I’m grateful that you are both generally OK although I could hear in your voices how seeing your community in a (preventable) shambles is taking its toll. I also hope Tanya has been spared some of the worst of this. Solidarity.

2022-08-02 03:44:35 +0000 UTCCrazy shit….just north of me here in Missouri they’re dealing with similar issues….down south in the Ozarks, we got almost nothing….geo-engineering is a very real thing….might not be relevant in this situation, but it’s not a “theory “….

2022-08-02 03:35:07 +0000 UTCThe libs have been showing their ass on this one, lots of shit takes on Reddit/Twitter/comment sections. I hope they’re bots. My wife and I moved from Colorado to KY in 2019 and this shit is making my blood boil, I can’t imagine how long-time KY folks feel reading that sort of crap. I’ve had to lean on two Sextonisms in these trying time… “You either believe in an emancipatory project for all peoples or you don’t” And “Resist the urge to weigh in”

2022-08-02 03:08:07 +0000 UTCSo glad to hear y’all are safe! I’m in Louisville and would be happy to drive down and help, though it sounds like sending money is the best thing I can do at the moment. Totally agree with Tom about how class conciseness feels like being saved💖 Love and solidarity forever!
