What HAPPENED inside this cockpit? Air France 11

On April 5th, 2022, an Air France Boeing 777 on approach to Paris’ Charles DeGaulle airport encountered serious flight control difficulties. The fate of all 192 people on board rested on the pilots’ ability to regain control of their apparently deranged aircraft. The ordeal was transmitted to ATC over the radio as alarms blared in the cockpit, and the plane rocked from side to side. How did the pilots get into this situation? And, more importantly, how would they get out of it?

Thanks Kartik, and I’m inclined to agree that there should be additional technological safeguards in place against this. Glad you enjoyed the episode :)

Oh my lord. I would almost like to blame this incident on aircraft design rather than the pilots. In a tense situation like this even pilots with several years of experience fail themselves. If both pilots can fly the plane at the same time, there must be a fail safe in situations where CRM has failed and a simple device on the flight stick lights up for whichever stick/pilot is in control. If the pilots see the light constantly flickering between their sticks, they'd immediately recognise their mistake. I think cockpit design needs to account for CRM failure wherever possible. Anyway that's my rant. Rather shocking incident. This was 1° away from a disaster. Well done on the video. The audio from the pilots makes it all the more frightening.
