How did a BOLT nearly crash this plane? | Hapag-Lloyd flight 3378

On July 12th, 2000, on the Greek island of Crete, 143 passengers and 8 crew boarded Hapag-Lloyd flight 3378, an Airbus A310 bound for Hannover, in Germany. Most of the passengers were German holidaymakers returning home after enjoying the sunshine and beaches the small island is famous for. No one on board knows it yet, but they would not make it to Hannover that day.

In fact, even the pilots won’t know where their plane will end up until minutes before the end of the flight. For years, investigators and the courts would argue over the causes of this accident, and the role that the captain played in it.

How did things go so wrong on this flight?
